UT Arlington Takes Down Memphis 68-64

I watched some of an earlier Memphis game, I believe it was against an #8 Oklahoma, but the arena was a ghost town. How has Pastner survived this long? That program has taken a straight nose dive.

Pastner has to be gone at the end of this season. But who does Memphis get that is better? They had their glory days with Cal and will never, ever get back to that level.

I knew they had beat another well known team this season, thanks

Yep. And it's also funny how Memphis and Ohio State play each other on Friday lol

He has a pretty big contract

Wonder if the "YIPPPPP" lady was there. I went to two UT-Arlington/UK games and she was present for both. Still have bad dreams about her.

But who does Memphis get that is better?

The best I could see them doing would be a good, well known mid-major coach like Bryce Drew or a high profile assistant like Jeff Capel. Not that either of them would necessarily take the job since Drew is a folk hero at Valpo and Capel has a cushy job at Duke as K's lead assistant; plus he turned down the Arizona State job. Granted Memphis has a better basketball history than ASU and competing against Tennessee wouldn't quite be like competing with Arizona, but the AAC is still a lesser conference than the Pac-12.

Of course they could always hope to strike gold with a lesser known mid-major, a bigger name retread or even a successful D-II or D-III coach.

I hope he and Crean deserve several more years to prove themselves.

The scary thing for Memphis is that this game wasn't a tournament or neutral court setting. This game was in Memphis. Ouch!

The other thing that is scary for Memphis is that this was no fluke loss. I watched much of this game and UT Arlington was just better. Memphis, as has been the case under Pastner, looked disorganized offensively and also unwilling to get down into a stance and move their feet on defense.

I think Pastner is nearing the end in Memphis, but the question for them is "who else can they get that is better?" I just don't see another big name coach taking that job.

Related question: if Pastner loses that job, what are the chances Calipari hires him as an assistant here at UK?

We need to get Tony Barbee hired as the head coach at some obscure small D-1 school and get Pastner on the staff here. Dude is really good at one thing and one thing only recruting....

But aside from the Memphis kids who were never leaving the city no matter what, who has he landed? Besides, it looks like Barbee is doing just fine on the recruiting trail here so far. That 2016 class doesn't leave much room for complaint.

O I definitely just want him as a lark....and your point about recruiting not really having anywhere to go but down is very valid. The true is I just don't really know what purpose Barbee serves? Robic is the point man on scouting and also helps draw up x's and o's game plans. Kenny Payne is our lead recruiter and helps coach the big men in practice. But I have no clue what Barbee actually does or how he contributes to the program???

Actually now that Crean was mentioned, Memphis might be able to get him after this year.
Actually now that you brought up cre… err K, who do you foresee taking the HC job after K leaves? I'm so glad you brought that up.

Sorry to disagree but a big NO. The staff has done fine without him. Pastner was only under calipari one season. Not to mention his recruiting has fell off except for local kids. They see him for what he is. There was a reason Cal would not fill his team with memohis kids. Not to mention look how many transfers since pastner took the job. He is a joke.

He's a recruiter and a really good one at that.

I don't understand the doubt associated with Barbee. He's on our side, the good side!

Umm, I think it's about time for them to admit that Josh Pastner era is a failure.

Maybe, but I don't know that a UT-Arlington loss is emblematic of that. If I remember correctly, UT Arlington gave us some fits last season. I believe they were the team that started out playing a zone and allowed us to jump out to a huge lead early.

They then switched to a full court press and man to man mid-way through the first half and gave us fits. Forced Andrew Harrison into a lot of turnovers. Had they started off with the press, it could've been a much closer game. If I'm remembering that correctly, then they have some talent. And as others mentioned, they also beat Ohio State this season.

I follow the Memphis program pretty close. Pastner is a dumpster fire. They will have to pay him 10 million to buy him out, and by several indications they might do it before the year ends. He's killed their prestige, their attendance and fan base, and he's managed to destroy their positioning on the stage.

Memphis will be lucky to get 6,000 people for the next game. I know for a fact they are expecting no more than 8,000(buddy of mine works in th offices). The Grizzlies have taken over as the baskrtball team of the town. It appears their baskrtball program is no more.

How anyone could argue he might be a good fit is beyond anything even the Memphis fan base who wants him gone.

Would love to hear from WSU/UK fan on this. This guy is something else. First he said "Memphis is doing great." Then "They're expecting too much". To him Memphis should just lose. Lol. When the uninformed have all these opinions man......

You realize Pastner is having to offer parents jobs on staff against his will JUST TO BE ABLE TO KEEP Memphis kids at home, right? He's a horrible recruiter. You're thinking of when he was selling Cals brand. That's gone.

He will never be offered a job here. He's not good enough.

Pastner has been a train wreck. How has he kept his job since the 09-10 season? The experiment is over, I don't know how many more year's of data Memphis needs in order to finally pull the plug. It's almost as if they are waiting for some miracle season.

actually he's a horrible head coach and was a great recruiter. But recruiting tends to tank once they figure out the horrible coaching part.

Memphis is in huge trouble. Best bet is to get another young coach and hope to god he is the next Brad Stevens.

The only time he's been believed to be a great recruiter was when he was selling another's mans product. At Arizona he was selling Lute Olson. At Memphis he was selling Calipari. Now, he's selling Josh pastner, and no one wants on that ship. Im not sure he was ever actually a "great" recruiter, he was just fortunate to be recruiting for legends of the game.

If the tiger's AD was a smart man, Pastner would be fired and they would make a hire that has the school winning again. I know Memphis doesn't play in a power conference, but i think it's a job that is still sexier than some out there. They have proven they will put out money to win. They play in a NBA arena. They have plenty of talent in the area to recruit from. This should be a job that a lot of good coaches are interested in. If the school could just hire a coach that could keep their talent home, the tigers as a program would win games and make the tourney every single year. I'm sure they won't fire Pastner. The dude can do no wrong in TN. No other school in the country would put up with the same results this man gets. Well, i take that back. IU is another school that puts up with the same crapy results.

I'd hire him. He can recruit. Not that we need anymore help there. [laughing]

no pastner recruited some good classes on his own at Memphis. this was before he was known as a goofy Opie Taylor trying to coach inner city kids from Memphis. it was a disaster.

if they fired him 3 years ago they may of been able to get a good coach. now the university has pulled the focus from basketball and Put it on football in hopes of getting into a good conf. Memphis should keep him because they do not care about basketball now anyways. get in a good conf on the back of football then try to bring in a new coach.

no way a solid coach would even consider Memphis right now.

Jeff Capel may be the best bet at this moment. It's very possible Duke will want to hand the reigns to one of K's guys and Capel is doing a great job recruiting as K's right-hand man. Although my hope is they just choose to go after the best, most qualified candidate regardless of whether he has any ties to Krzyzewski or not. Plus it's not like Krzyzewski's assistants have exactly been brilliant once getting their own head coaching gigs, which I hope the Duke athletic department and Krzyzewski himself take note of since I have no doubt K will at least have some say in who the next guy is.

Mike Brey has been the most successful one, but last season was the first time one of his teams made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.
