so, with the corruption news going on, is UNC off the hook? If I were the NCAA, I’d push them to the front of the line in order to save face.

they have stuff pending. i don't see how this helps them except for the notion that "everyone does it". fake classes/grades is still worse imo. it's robbing your own institution, and robbing people of an education.

It is the exact opposite of the OP.

This explosion will fade in intensity, but serve as a backdrop for all NCAA activities in the foreseeable future. The NCAA will basically be seen as an inept bunch of pencil necks who got caught with their pants down as this scandal was unfolding.

All eyes will be on them to see if they can effectively and sternly discipline the sport. The press attention to the UNC thing will be INCREASED by this scandal -- not only were schools paying for players, but UNC was letting them play while staying eligible with fake grades.

The NCAA HAS to hammer UNC now.

The NCAA is presiding over a collection of corrupt institutions which are unable to restrain themselves. If they walk away from the NC filth, then they are also proving their impotence to do anything to correct it.

Maybe UNC was offering up money like UL to get recruits as well. They have been struggling to sign top recruits with their investigation going on (just like UL). They probably already think they can get away with anything with the NCAA, so I'm not going to assume they are free and clear. The Jordan Brand could be funneling money to recruits through the school. That would be hilarious if that came out.

maybe the Feds will realize that the NCAA is a shadow operation that does not deserve it's tax exemption because it does not do it's intended job.
I'd think there would be even more pressure for them to show they have some shred of control.

If any other school would have cheated like they did they would have been smoked by now. Listening to the ESPN/ ACC homers makes me sick. Jay bilas constantly says it is just an academic issue. To play basketball you have to be academically eligible and UNC used fake classes going back to the Dean Smith era so that their athletes could stay eligible. That's cheating and I dont give a damn how these ESPN experts try to twist it. Derek rose may have possibly cheated on a damn SAT test and they stripped Memphis for it. Every season that players on the team took fake classes, those wins should be vacated.

I hope and pray this is true

There are going to be so many teams on probation they might get their own tournament bracket. It would surprise me that the UNC thing gets swept under the rug now. The NCAA is going to be distracted.

It's separate parts within the NCAA in the first place, so no one will be distracted. But think in terms of human psychology. You've been embarrassed on your job by letting something slide that turned into a fiasco. The next time you have a chance to make a decision do you, 1.) Err on the side of appearing uninterested and distracted and lenient or 2.) Err on the side of showing you can be tough, decisive and ruthless.

Does the NCAA want this Associated Press lead to all news agencies: "The NCAA, still reeling from a sport-wide scandal over paid basketball recruits, today gave the University of North Carolina a slap on the wrist in a decades-long scandal that involved giving athletes fake grades for bogus classes..."

Or would this be better: "The NCAA, still reeling from a sport-wide scandal over paid basketball recruits, today sent a message that cheating will no longer be tolerated by vacating a basketball title from the University of North Carolina and placing the school's entire program on three-years suspension from post season play..."

If you are the culprit, your done. If I contributed, I am done and should say so.

The AP has been around much longer than the NCAA. The NCAA never said they would tell the truth (they ride this thought into unbelievable circumstance) but the AP tries to tell the truth. They do get it wrong sometimes. To often for me. Still believe in most of the AP.

If I could like this post ten times I would !!! You would think if the NCAA wants to be even remotely considered as relevant they will clean this mess up now for sure ! !!

the pace of the NCAA action in the UNC scandal makes me think they are trying their best for people to forget about it so when they just wrist slap UNC*** nobody notices, and now this huge pay for play thing.

IMO, the UNC*** scandal which took place over 25 years is still the worst ever in college sports... Players passed classes that were bogus and received bogus grades, all in the name of keeping them athletically eligible and on the field at a University that is close to IVY status.

I'm done with the sport if it's not cleaned up, and it starts with UNC***.

My team has cheated and paid the price, why would I continue to watch a sport where other school cheat way worse and get away with and win titles because of it.

Yes to the above except; In today's world, finding someone who can be embarrassed is nearly as hard as winning a lottery...

My gut tells me a UNC connected person turned states evidence over to the attention of the feds in exchange for NCAA leniency. And I guarantee the NCAA are lying pieces of trash.

I think UNCheat will just get to use this as more misdirection. LOOK OVER THERE!!!

Anyone who thinks the NCAA COI is looking for an excuse to let UNC off the hook has not been paying attention the past six months, Sankey and the boys are thirsty for blood.

And I firmly believe the first NOA was not as harmless and “watered-down” as we all believe. UNC has known all along that the COI is ready to light them up no matter what enforcement puts in front of them.
