UK exploded for 15 runs today behind an absolute gem of an outing by Kyle Cody. 7 innings of three hit shutout baseball. I'll take it! UK hit 7 home runs including two by Shelby and Pompey. All in all a good weekend. Hopefully they can continue the hot hitting next weekend.

You know I think we might ought to keep this Pompey kid on the roster, 3 Homers the last 2 games. Shelby is hotter than a forest fire in August, just killin it. Beggs and Cody look primed and ready to go, hopefully Z Brown and B Wilson will get the pilot light going and help us some.

Another interesting lineup today. Definitely appears that we don't have a true leadoff hitter yet. Wilson didn't start today so just an interesting lineup. Haven't looked at the stats yet though.

Yeah, Carson led off today, and tho he did homer in the game it was his only hit. Wilson started off well, but tailed off. someone needs to step up into that role the next couple of weeks. Although I am sure Eckstein and Hendo are wanting to look at a lot of players these opening couple of weeks.

Pretty surprised to see Hjelle pitching this early. He will be one heck of a force. Looks like Cottam could be our catcher of the future.

Where can you get an old fashioned box score, I looked on UKathletics.com, and could not find one to save my life . . .

Looking at stats for the weekend... I have to say that I am very impressed by Mahan so far. I don't like him hitting 5th, but he hit .417 this weekend, including a double and a triple. He still needs to clean up a bit of the defense, but he can certainly get there. I've been hard on him in the past. Hope he continues to prove me wrong.

One interesting thing is that we used 12 different pitchers this weekend. We still have Daniel Tillo, Austin Keen, Dylan Dwyer, Keegan McHood, Jake Hamilton, and Dima Ballard on the roster. All of these are freshmen or redshirt freshmen with the exception of Dwyer. On the other stat sheets I have looked at many times we don't pitch more than 12 guys. At times we have thrown as many as 15 people. So, I have to believe that Henderson will, at most, use 3 of these guys that are left. I at least expect to see Tillo and Dwyer, with possibly Hamilton adding some depth. The question that we can't really answer is who will become our midweek starter. Not sure we will even have a clear idea on that until March 2nd, but it is fun to speculate.

Mahan did boot a couple this weekend, but he also made a couple of spectacular fielding plays on Saturday that had the crowd buzzing. I too like his.417 avg. don't think C Heady can hit like Mahan can.

My vote on the weekday starter will be with Zach Logue or possibly Dwyer. I like Mahan at short. He just needs to clean up the few errors he had. Hitting 5th? Not a fan but hey. Whatever works. What worries me, and Henderson has done this so many times. Someone will get hot the first couple of weeks, I.e Tristan Pompey, and he'll bench him for whatever reason never to be seen again.

Pompey is too hot to take out. However, it might not surprise me to see Henderson go with either Squire or Arnold over Cottam, who has played excellent.

If Henderson does not pitch a freshman during the midweek I think that will be a huge mistake. We will almost without a doubt lose three weekend starters after this year. I think we need to get as many freshmen as much experience as possible to prepare for that. I think the best thing that you can do is to start a freshman during the midweek and then work him into the weekend later if you need to. If Dwyer starts in the midweek then it is likely that we will have no one returning with starting experience, or no one with regular starting experience. Logue wouldn't be too bad, but I would rather have the freshmen working the midweek while we have a bit more experience during the weekend.

You also have to wonder who the closer will be. Lewis got a save on Saturday, but it is hard to say who might be that guy. I think Strecker is going to be this year's Shepherd. He'll pitch often and Henderson will lean on him heavily. Wilson could be the guy, but he didn't really fill me a with a ton of confidence in his performance this weekend. It's fun to see how this all plays out though.
