UK to honor first Black football players with statues

I hope Hackett's is an action shot of him blowing up Stephen Garcia.
My man Wilbur..... Just an all around fantastic person. When I got to ask him about the Garcia thing he told me with a snicker... "Chuk I don't know what happen... must've just been a flashback to the days of old... "

how did that player die in practice? That's crazy, I've never heard of this before. Can you imagine that happening in today's game? I mean I'm aware that it does happen but I just couldn't imagine that happening to a UK player...would just be devestating

It says in that linked article between the new practice fields and practice facility.

Would like to know if this going to be the first in a series of statues honoring UK football players. You know Bryant, Blanda, Parilli, Michaels, Still, etc. Guys who made major on-field contributions in UK football history.

i know it was a neck injury...he was paralyzed. he died a few weeks later, but the details i do not know.
man, that is awful. Glad to see we're honoring these guys. I'm sure it was very difficult to get black kids to want to go play football games in Alabama or Mississippi.

its something I've wondered about in celebrating our program. its a big deal. we were the first. it took courage. it took courage from the university. it took courage from the coaches. and it took unbelievable courage from the kids and their families to make this happen. way overdue. very glad we are doing it.

It is nice to see some of these men finally getting some long overdue recognition. Most of us have no clue how hard it was for a black man to play in the Deep South during this time. All the racial prejudices that were going on probably took it's toll on these young men every day.

Great idea by the UK administration to show their appreciation for the courage these pioneers had to make the world just a little bit better.

As Wilbur Hackett pointed out, it wasn't easy playing anywhere in the SEC including Lexington, Ky.
