UK Baseball Scrimmage

Thanks for finding these.

Rhodes in CF?

I doubt that happens in the Spring. He was likely there because of the split teams. Shelby will probably be there in the Spring. Then you will likely see Rhodes either in left or right. By some accounts, Anu continues to be horrible, to an almost comical extent, in the outfield, so he will not be moving off DH.

Where I think you have some questions is with the infield effecting the outfield. As it stands, for true outfielders we have Hill, Any, Shelby, Rhodes, Bryan, and freshman Houston King. However, will UK move infielders into the outfield? We are quite sure that Collett will lock down 1B and Kessler will be at C. Estep made a strong case for 3rd, but JUCO transfer Plastiak might try to make a case there We then have Grace, Schultz, Ritter, Zeke, and Curtis vying for the middle infield positions. You could also throw the freshmen Kavanagh and Hicks in there. Church could also be in the mix at third. Point being, there are a ton of guys that could play in the INF, especially up the middle. So, what if Ritter beats out Schultz defensively? Do we see him move into the outfield? How many of these guys would be viable OF options? Are they trying any of them as such?

Forgot about Hill coming back from injury. I always liked his game in CF. Very aggressive. I also like his bat much better than Shelby.

I would be surprised to see any freshman other than King and a few pitchers to get much PT with so many veterans back.

Yea, I'd think that they won't find a lot of PT. Everyone, pretty much, has to hit better. Shelby, for instance, hit .273 in 2019. That looks pretty solid until you look deeper and see that his hitting in conference was just .215. Collett did similarly, hitting .259 overall and .214 in conference. Can't have two of your better hitters playing like that. Of course, that was a lifetime ago, or so it seems, and they have grown up a lot since then.

You are right, we need to hit. Even in the abbreviated schedule last year we really only hit against what should have been weaker competition.

I would think there would be 1 spot open in the OF and that's about it to start off with Ming giving the vets the benefit of the doubt.

Any idea if there is another scrimmage this weekend?

Not sure. I think they are having them somewhat regularly. I know a few weeks back they had one on Wednesday. So, they may continue that type of trend. If I hear anything I'll let you know.

I would guess you'd have Shelby and Rhodes with locked down positions in the OF. It is just a matter of where. Then I'd think Hill would have the step above everyone else after coming back from his season ending injury. However, there is a lot of traffic on this team and I am not sure how they will deal with all of it.

Thanks for posting these. I listened to Coach Ming last night on WLAP, his demeanor sounded a lot more like it did his first season.

Obviously stuff has been going on behind the scenes we'll never know about. Kinda reminds me of what Coach Mitchell went through...we'll never know but hopefully we're turning the corner and getting back on the road to Omaha.

So he was excited about this upcoming season and the new guys?

Any details?

I was listening at work so my focus was in and out a lot. He discussed the scrimmage and wanting things to get back to normal, how good it felt to just get back out there and play etc. I remember him speaking highly of some transfer but I didnt catch who.

His tone and demeanor are what I picked up on. Sounded a hell of a lot like the coach we knew first season. Positivity and optimism. The guy who did KSR Mondays. Not sure why he went away from that but it coincided with things on the field going downhill no doubt.
