Historical perspective on that. Seeding started in 79. From 79 through 2009, UK was:
4-1 against 2 seeds. (wins- IU in 83, Illinois in 84, Utah in 96 and 97. Lost to UNC in 95)
3-9 against 1 seeds. (wins- UMass in 96, Minnesota in 97, Duke in 98. Lost to UL in 83, Georgetown 84, St John's 85, Duke 92, Michigan 93, Michigan State 99, Maryland 02, UConn 06, and Kansas 07)
So Cal has 1 fewer win against top 2 seeds in 6 seasons than UK had in 31 seasons before he arrived. And it's not like UK was in some historical rut that whole time period. Even with the generally mediocre decade of the 80's, even with probation, and even with the Tubby malaise of 99-07, I'm pretty sure UK won more tournament games in that period than anybody but Duke and UNC. Which mainly goes to show that, while UK's ceiling has some variable height, UK's basement never really goes very low.
