SPORTSSmith and Elliott will return for UofL baseball in 2021

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville baseball student-athletes Adam Elliott and Luke Smith each announced they would be returning for the 2021 season on Wednesday.

The two have elected to utilize an additional season of eligibility granted by the NCAA after the 2020 campaign which was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elliott has spent four seasons with the Cardinals, working as an integral part of the bullpen each year. The southpaw has pitched in 67 career games with a 6-3 overall record and a pair of saves. Elliott has 89 strikeouts in 86 innings of work and his career ERA of 1.88 currently ranks third-best in Louisville history.

During the shortened 2020 season, the Louisville native was 1-0 in a team-high seven appearances. Elliott posted a 0.87 ERA, allowing just one run in 10.1 innings with 14 strikeouts.

Smith has played the last two years at UofL after transferring from Parkland College. The Champaign, Ill., native has a 9-1 record with the Cardinals in 22 career appearances. Smith was 6-1 during the 2019 season, during which he recorded the two longest postseason appearances in Louisville history with 8.1 innings in a NCAA Regional elimination game against Illinois State and again at the College World Series versus Vanderbilt.

Working as the Sunday starter in 2020, Smith was 3-0 in four starts with 18 strikeouts in 23.2 innings. He turned in seven shutout innings on March 1 as the Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of Western Michigan.

Louisville was 13-4 during the first month of the 2020 season and was ranked as high as No. 2 when the season was stopped.

Ohh ok. Those two weren't drafted. I originally thought you were saying like Detmers was returning. I was about to poop my pants.

Think those two would help our roster...both would be weekend pitchers?

Smith would be our Friday starter. Elliott would be our closer in 2021.

A part of that is because our pitching is about as bad as it can be, and because Louisville does an excellent job getting and developing pitchers. I don't think Smith is necessarily a dominant Friday guy, but he would be the best we have.

Still, Louisville had 2 pitchers taken in the 1st round of the draft. Detmers was 10th and Miller 29th. I originally thought you were referring to these two returning, so I was floored by that possibility. UL getting Smith and Elliott back is akin to us getting TJ Collett back. Basically just get "lucky," with the canceled season and the additional senior year they are granted.

Just sounded pretty big and said it may make them favorite for NC.

I think it is good for them. They got back two very good players instead of losing them to the draft or to free agency. UL will certainly be in the discussion next year, but doubt they are a favorite. Florida was the favorite this year, and I don't think they had anyone drafted. I think they may have everyone back, and just a year older. Louisville will have to replace 2 weekend starters, both absolute studs.

It's big for Louisville to get both those guys back, but more in the context of avoiding a bare cupboard than having a dominant pitching staff.

UF alone has 6-7 guys better than Smith or Elliot. Vandy has the 2 top starting pitching prospects for the 21 draft in their rotation next year. Virginia has significantly more pitching talent, and I'm sure I could go on.

Louisville was much better from a roster perspective in 2020 than they project to be in 21. They'll still be very good, but more along the lines of a top 10-15 team than an Omaha favorite.
