I wonder what our fan base would do if one year Calipari threw a Tubby recruiting class together?

We used to hype those stellar classes. We had a full year for ultra pumpage.

so anything better than that and no one can say anything? If we dropped to a top 5 class it would still be good but also a major drop off right?

U.K. And duke are the few programs that cans should expect top classes every year. I think that is ok.

I thought the point was we should be happy things have gotten (a lot) better. I think we are. I think we are also very greedy and that is okay for the most part.

recruiting is all relative. It depends on what your recruiting platform is. Kentucky, for example, could not afford to bring in the #5 class because of our OAD system and turnover. That would mean we lost most if not all of our top tier targets.

A program who returns an all conference point guard and 3 solid 2nd teamers would be set with a 5-15 class.

Should be elementary at this point. The top 3-5 in these classes are necessary for us because we lack returning experience and all amaerican / conference types of players.

Yes a top class is a top 10 class. We should expect that every year. What Cal has done ( even K hasn't as in the last 8 years he has had some non top 5 classes ) is beyond insane. We have had a top 2 class every single freaking year and the few times we have been 2 instead of 1 IMO we should of been #1 but due to bias weren't.

Well said and true. We had to have the #1 class in 17 as we lost so much . Next season we will lose a decent amount but bring back a ton of guys as well.

Yeah. Our classes have been pretty amazing. I did not intend to imply otherwise.

We put our tail between our legs and hyped the Jared Carter--Adam Williams class too. Those were the days when Tubby could still pull a FF rabbit out of a 3-star hat, to hear the bards tell it...

2005 class was worse. Sims, Carter, Williams.

worst UK class in history. I mean holy shit. You should sign a better group than that class without even trying. Rekalin Sims did have that game against West Virginia where he hit like 3 straight 3s and that was cool so there's that. Jared Carter was tall a lot. Williams put on Jeff Sheppard's jersey and did a reverse pump dunk at Madness. Those are their career highlights.

I didn't understand how god awful lazy his recruiting was until Cal.

Adam Williams
Jared Carter
Rekalin Sims

You shouldn't have to leave campus to sign that class. Just offer them through email.

“Pretty amazing” as in historically unprecedented over an 8 year period?

I’d agree if that’s what “pretty amazing” means.

No one in college basketball, at any time, has remotely come close to what Cal has put together recruiting-wise over the last eight years.

Tubby successfully recruited 8 total five star players to Kentucky in ten years: Carruth, Prince, Bogans, Stone, Parker, Rondo, Crawford, Morris. Of those, two transferred, one was kicked off the team (Parker) and a third, Crawford, tried to transfer but came back due to potentially losing 1.5 years of eligibility. Factor in Rondo and Morris' disdain for the man, and one can claim that 6/8ths of Tubby's 5 stars couldn't stand him.

Cal has over 5x times Tubby’s total number of 5 stars in two less years of recruiting.

Tubby was abysmal and a complete embarrassment to this program //EDIT// after his own system was in place.

Aside from 1998, I agree.

ON the bad recruiting note and just for fun... i see that Scott Rigot is coaching at Marshall and Reggie Hanson as USF.

Nothing embarrassing about the run from 2003-2005. We were arguably the best team entering the tourney two of those years, and narrowly missed the Final Four in the other.

But then it went downhill in a hurry.

Probably right on the semantical lines of what constitutes “embarrassment”; although I would contend that losing to UAB in the 2nd round as a #1 seed in ’04 and getting thumped by Marquette by 13 in the during the ’03 tourney (Bogans' injury or not, that stuff was pathetic, especially given how easily Marquette gave up the ghost so easily in the next round) certainly didn’t leave an indelible mark on anyone outside the BBN. Those seasons certainly ended in on-the-court embarrassment at worst, and massive disappointments at best.

I have a unique perspective on the UAB loss because I didn't watch it. My grandfather's funeral was that day. So I never experienced any sense of embarrassment. For me it was just a bad tourney loss, like so many other teams (and even us) have had through the years.

And I'll always believe that the Bogans' injury was the main culprit behind that 2003 loss. We were a tightly wound watch that year with our defensive rotations, and one bum ankle was enough to throw us totally out of synch.

The closest I came to embarrassment during that stretch was watching a game sealing rebound slip through the fingers of both Bobby Perry and Sheray Thomas, simultaneously, vs. Michigan St. For me, that was the beginning of the end of Tubby Time.

I knew something had changed regarding BBN in the 1999 when UK went on to lose in Lexington to Tennessee for the first time since 1979. Wayne Turner missed a 5 foot floater that would have won the game. UK scored a whopping 46 points to Tennessee’s 47 points.

UK went on to lose 9 games that season, not a bad season, but certainly trending toward the routine 10 loss seasons and plow horse offensive style we grew to consider normal under Smith.

That is what I meant. Sheesh. Not sure why I feel like I have to defend my allegiance to cal.ready for the season to begin.

That was an ugly game.

But we also won 26 straight games in Tubby's 6th season. And went into the tourney his 7th season as overall number 1.

So I've always thought the Tubby failures were exaggerated.

Was he a notch (or 2) below our best? Yes. Did he recruit at a level commensurate with our stature as a program? Hardly ever.

But I would say he did a "pretty good" job at Kentucky until the wheels started coming off the last couple years.

Thing is, "pretty good" was never going to be good enough at Kentucky.

There's just no comparison. I'll just leave it at that.
