Trey Lyles Article

Crazy to go from a 13 percent three point shooter here at UK, then hit 43.8% in the pros. It never really made any sense in the first place. His shooting form was great and for 3/4 of the year, his mid range shot was money. It shows how rapidly you can improve in the NBA.

Just about a month ago everyone out here (I live in Utah) was talking about him as a bust. Just goes to show how quickly things can change. I still think the Jazz should have drafted Booker instead, but Lyles should be a solid player in the league once he gets his feet under him.

I think this shows why the NBA drafts a lot on potential. When the NBA becomes your job and you can do nothing but that for 8 hours or more a day, you see the improvement.

Yep. Classes and studying and such take a pretty good but if time. When Briscoe goes pro he'll probably hit 75% from the line because they'll make him shoot 3000 a day.

Trey Lyles is shooting threes at 43% in the NBA, he shot 13% at UK.

This is something that has always bothered me. Very frequently our guys struggle to shoot well, while at UK. Skal was a great shooter and even Humphries early on, now both throw up junk. Briscoe free throw % went from 70 to 30. Booker couldn't shoot the last 6 weeks here. Hawkins was much better in high school.
Basically Lamb was the only pure shooter that came here and shot it consistently. Shooting is mental, and something about the atmosphere at UK gets in these kids heads it seems.

Also, Trey was a great shooter when he first got to UK, he shot lights out in the exhibition games etc.... But then his percentage declined throughout the year. Its just a frustrating observation I've noticed with Cal's teams

Could Cal be teaching them what they can't do when they get here instead of capitalizing on what they do well when they get here? I think what Cal does is round his players out to be the best they can be when drafted and not "one trick pony's". I think that is a reason why Cal's players do something in the league while a lot of other draftee's don't. jmuo in my basketball ignorant way...

they practice 20 hours week in college... you have to pick your poison. (of course they do their individual practice too...)

in NBA, i bet Steph Curry practices 20 hours in 2-2.5 days.

Also, in NBA you can work on every aspect of your game...Some of the more hard working guys probably gets more than 70 hours per week between physical practicing and film studies.

We never got to see the best of lyles here. The injuries, being forced to play out of position at the 3 the entire year, and deferring to our other bigs, all hindered him from really showing what he could do here.

The kid is a tremendously skilled big man who could've been a huge college star under different circumstances. If he was on this year's team he'd be putting up huge numbers. Not surprised at all to see him doing so well in the NBA.

I was really hoping he & dakari would return for this season, those guys could really have closed a lot of our holes. Lyles could have been an AA but he made a good decision for himself & is a millionaire now.

I've said it in several previous threads, but our guys should just start shooting NBA 3's. They're going to be shooting them soon anyway. A few feet isn't that big of a difference, and if it is, then that doesn't bode well for their prospects.

NBA has better shooting coaches, more practice time and better spacing. Plus, Lyles played out of position last year and him playing as a stretch 4 has turned his weaknesses last year into strengths this year
