Transfer Portal Day Could Become Bigger Than NSD

The portal has huge ramifications for programs and today was Portal Day.

UK gets 10 wins after a portal season that saw Levis, Rosenthal, Jones, and Robinson come to Lexington. (USC probably had it better than anyone last season got the best WR in the country to transfer from Pitt, and OU’s QB who is a Heisman finalist. They were one game from making the playoffs.)

NSD builds over time but lots of players aren’t ready. Like linemen especially need several years to be physically ready to compete in the SEC. The portal can turnaround fortunes in a season, but after a mediocre portal season you may not turnaround anything. Then that could effect your long term recruiting plans.

I thought for a while that next year would be a 6-8 win season given all the personnel losses, but if UK recruits the portal more like two years ago than last year that probably won’t be the case.

Some schools have essentially a "Portal Coordinator." I imagine about all do in some form or fashion. Last year, one school, I think maybe Texas State, took only portal guys, no HS/JUCO signees. Expect we'll see more of that.

Imo it's way more important. You know what the portal guys can do vs college competition. Recruiting is way more educated guessing.

That's especially so for some portal positions like QB, because nil will make it difficult for most teams to be in the tall weeds of QB recruiting

As I said earlier in season no need recruiting 25 high schools players
It’s all about the portal
I mentioned elsewhere that some schools now have a "Portal Coordinator" and one school, think it may have been Texas State, signed portal guys only last year, no HSs or JUCOs. I expect we'll see more of that.

Maybe I'm weird but I will get a lot more excited about getting Drake Maye or Sam Hartman type player out of the portal than winning a recruiting battle for an unproven four star high schooler. Both are important! But only one is important for the next season 99% of the time.

Should be getting a more mature/developed player out of the portal, that's the allure. Of course, could also be getting a guy with bad habits, improper mechanics or guys who know how the "system" works.

Re Maye/Hartman...those guys are going to the highest bidder. Saw an interview last week with Mack Brown where he said one of his players told him he was having an "insane" amount of money thrown at him to transfer. Didn't name him but assume now he's meaning Maye.

I'm OK with the transferring, with guys trying to better themselves and all that stuff but I'm having a real problem with the tampering. That needs to be fixed ASAP. I mean, tampering isn't allowed in pro sports, is dealt with severely, should be in college sports too.

Agree. But the more big names that enter the portal then the more likely UK is able to get someone better than Mertz. A rising tide lifts all boats sort of thing. Another metaphor: If UK is the remora fish eating leftover scraps from the Great White sharks then I'd like the best scraps possible. Not too dissimilar from HS recruiting, I guess.

...but Levis getting drafted in the first round doesn't hurt the sales pitch either to transfer QBs. Plus, I'm sure Levis could share the NIL money he made which sounds like was at least mid-six figures range and he was still turning down some opportunities too.

That is the million dollar question. How can you fix what has been opened by Supreme court?

You will never be able to prove/disprove tampering. Kids will be contacted thru agents/contacts to gain interest for a university. It will never be able to be investigated. Heck when schools cheat in the old days...it took years for NCAA to investigate and sanction. This will be infinitely harder to track.

The only thing I can see is you have to put the 1 year sit out for transfer rule back fully in place. Maybe the grad transfer thing can stay....maybe if your coach leaves it opens up an immediate transfer as well. But the rest needs to sit a year to slow this down.

Could ? It already is that’s why no one should worry about high school rankings
Hit the damn portal like a dog
Get older experienced players thst can help asap
