Transfer Portal Data

In the top 20, 6 teams have right at half of their starters as transfers. And #22 and #23 also have almost half transfer starters. So much for 'recruit and develop'. Why even bother recruiting HS kids? Just go out and raid the transfer portal every year and, evidently, you can be pretty darn good even with half your starters being newcomers. It's the new reality but I don't like it and I don't think it's good for CFB in the long run.

Yup...and let's be realistic about teams like Bama, Michigan, etc...they are basically just stacking up 5* kids, they do lose more off their depth from years past....but they basically have all 4/5* kids at every spots and then a few spots where things don't pan out....they just go shopping at the portal store for their needs.

I just don't really get what the point of this is now-a-days (it was always somewhat slanted to who could buy the best recruits) but this is like a glorified AAU/Travel/Select team basically. Is it really even competitive sports any longer?

2 of the top 5 off the field/court changes in NCAA history happened at the same time with NIL and the transfer portal. It created a monster that is not going away.

In my opinion NIL and Transfer Portal have helped level the playing field more than what it was. Sure your traditional powers are pretty much going to get the kids they want at first. However when those kids are waiting their turn some are going to get restless and start looking for playing time and NIL deals at other places.

Take a look at FSU for example after Jimbo left FSU tanked going 7-6, 5-7, 6-7, 3-6, 5-7 & 10-3. They were working the portal hard before that 10-3 season last year. Now they are in a position to where they can back off the portal and focus more towards high school recruiting.

I agree the court rulings forced NIL on colleges..but transfer portal has nothing to do with the court…we need to kill the portal nonsense to restore sanity

But it does. The NCAA used to require transfers to sit out a year. Following the most recent court cases, the NCAA knows it cannot enforce any rules now. The NCAA opened up the transfer portal because they know they will get sued and crushed in court if the try to enforce any transfer restrictions. They cannot afford endless big lawyer fees just to get beat in court again.

I think you’re stretching things to fit a narrative…college only was required to let players make money off their likeness..basically having perpetual free agency was not needed. Hell.pros don’t even get this freedom to hop every year
