Towles was asked by Kyle Tucker if he stood by what he said yesterday on the Finebaum show, and this is what he had to say.

"I didn't think it was going to be that big, (but) I would say it again," he said. "You know, I firmly believe that. I don't think I could be more clear with what I said, and I totally stand by what I said. I've just seen the work we've put in and ... I know for a fact that we that kind of talent and we have that potential, that if guys play how I know they can play, then we can for sure get there."

"It was as honest as I possibly could be," Towles said. "You've got people who think I'm crazy, and that's fine. Tell me I'm crazy all you want. I really don't care. At the end of the day, we're going to take our team, and we're going to play whoever they tell us to, and we're going to give it all we got. I think that, no doubt, we got the talent to win every game we play."

Stoops seemed to like it.

"I don't want a kid getting on there, getting on some national show, and saying, 'I hope we win a few games,'" Stoops said. "You don't say those things unless you put in the work. I think we're putting in the work."

Boom Williams:

"It's something we've believed in since the end of last year, the heartbreak of last year," Williams said. "In order to make that happen, you gotta have everybody all in, which is one of our core values and what Coach Stoops preaches. So we're all in."

Jordan Swindle:

"If you don't aim for it, you'll never achieve it. I don't care about the people that raised their eyebrows," senior offensive tackle Jordan Swindle said. "They're not in this room. So they don't know what we're doing; they don't know how hard we've been working. That's our goal for this year. We want to win six games, get to a bowl, and from there get to the SEC championship. I believe we have the tools to do it, and I'm supremely confident in our team right now."

Shannon Dawson liked Towles' confidence too.

"I loved it," offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. "I like the confidence and our kids do believe that."

I don't know what people expected him to say. Players need to believe they can win every game, even when they can't. Outside of the comments on his comments it sounds like they had a bad day of practice. So hard to keep energy up toward the end of camp, but I appreciate Stoops honesty when they don't practice well.

I think it speaks more to the fact that our media (and many in Kentucky) have such a low opinion of the football team that they're shocked when they find out that our players and coaches actually feel like they're not inferior to the rest of the conference. It's just a mindset that's deeply entrenched around here. Mark Stoops actually got a little testy with Kyle Tucker today after Tucker asked him if he liked what Towles said yesterday (Tucker was obviously shocked that a Kentucky football player felt like they could compete with anyone). Stoops said "Of course I do. I mean, we don't come out here and do all of this just to win a few games. What's he supposed to do?" He looked like he was about to choke someone when he was saying it haha. I'm trying to get the video of it up right now. I thought it was funny, and loved that Stoops didn't back down from out media's low opinion of this program. I'm sure our coaches have to be sitting there shaking their heads after these questions from our basketball-crazed media around here that is shocked that these coaches and players feel like they're a good team.

Like sometimes our media will ask questions and pretty much paint the picture that 6 wins is some kind of huge achievement for this team and I can tell our coaches just want to grab them and shake them and be like 'Hey, this team can win more than 6 games, 6 wins is far from our goal. Did you not see how close we were last year?' I can just tell our coaching staff is kind of shocked at how low the expectations are for this team coming from the media. Shannon Dawson seems to be the most vocal about it. When they put those low expectations in front of him he usually quickly shoots them down and will say something about how this team can compete with anyone.

You always want your team to believe they can win more than they probably should. This is a team that could easily win 6 or 7 games with 8 not being out of the question. I would hate to think that they were shooting for a 7 win season. That line of thinking would make it damn near impossible for them to pull out 8 or more wins.

You can change the players. You can change the coaches. You can change the schemes. But, the most important (and in my opinion most difficult) thing to change is the culture. Unfortunately, that's been a culture of losing for UK football. Ask any fan of any SEC program and I guarantee they would agree that Mark Stoops took over the toughest job in the SEC and, maybe by being in the SEC, the toughest job in all of college football. In the SEC it's very rare to establish the kind of dominance that Alabama had for a few years, but most of the other great teams at least make occasional runs at conference championships (and in turn national championships).

Without being negative I think most of us believe UK is 1-2 years away from being actual contenders, but that doesn't mean they can't make noise. The players on the team should never be looking at it objectively. They should be bought in. They should believe they can conquer the world. In my opinion, this is the best sign that Stoops is actually worth the money he's being paid.

Only in Kentucky football would your own media question or criticize a player for being "over-optimistic"
I bet fans from other SEC teams that read those comments laugh their a$$es off.

Absolutely disgraceful

I think that's why it was so hard for Mississippi State and South Carolina to get over the 7-win hump..it took a while to change that culture..even with better players. A team that feels like they *have* to win a game is usually going to be the one that does.

I sure hope that the UK QB and players believe that they can compete for a SEC Championship. That is a big step toward actually being able to do so.
