Top 15 (5 star) recruits who never made it in the NBA

Man, that was a horrific piece of journalism/click bait. Very poorly written; I'd bet most HS newspapers have better sports writers.

And what was the criteria they used to make this determination? It seemingly bounced all over the place depending on who they wanted to put on the list.

He could have easily replaced some of the players on that list with UK players. Dakari Johnson, Archie Goodwin, Doron Lamb, to name a few are very similar to players on that list.

Good thing is the writer appears to like coach Cal and UK so he left them out.

Definitely agree about the writing.

Archie Goodwin has made over $4 million and has played 4 seasons in the NBA. Dakari Johnson was recently signed by the Thunder and will be on their opening day roster making $851,000. Neither is considered a bust.

It wasn't even accurate. Joshua Smith fro, UCLA was not in the same class as Rudy Gay or Sebastian Telfair. He was in the same class as Terrence Jones and Big Enes.

Most of those players had significant flaws in their game that it is easy to understand why they never made it.

And Doron lamb was a 6'2 non-athlete who was ranked in the 20s. Also one of Cal's least cooperative players. What in the world was Cal gonna do to get him to stick?

You missed the whole point didn't you. There are people on his list who made more money and played more years than either Lamb or Johnson.

His method of choosing made no sense. All I was saying is the players I listed could have been included as they haven't done anymore than others he did list.

I guess you don't think Anthony Bennett is a bust either. Correct?

Take Xavier Henry for example. He was ranked number three in the ESPN 100 for the high school class of 2009. Just try to guess two guys ranked lower than him. Here’s a little hint; both of them were one and dones in Kentucky.

Also, how many of these guys did we potentially dodge, either by purpose or accident? I'm at Selby, X Henry, Quincy Miller and I still have half the list to go.

He criteria should be players ranked at or near the top
of their class. Those top 5 guys who were busts.

Selby, Henry, Samuels, and Miller are the guys that stand out to me. Those four were top 5 can't miss guys.

Lamb should not be anywhere on that list. He was a fringe top 25 guy.

Johnson was top 10 and Goodwin was top 15. Not quite the bust that the aforementioned guys were.

Some others on the list were iffy.

But the article was simply about 5 star players who "didn't" make it in the NBA.

Not to mention, Scout rated lamb a 4 star, number 29 or 30 in class I believe.

Making it should be about longevity and contribution, not money made.
But it becomes a pretty big stretch to label a player a huge failure when that player made millions of dollars from basketball. That only happens for about 40-50 guys per year. Some guy was a top 5 recruit, and didn't last in the NBA? Well, there have been a ton of guys like that. There have been a ton of top 5 DRAFT PICKS who didn't last in the NBA. It's really, really, really hard to have any kind of extended NBA career.

As others have noted, this is a poorly written, poorly defined piece of clickbait.

Henry & Mullens at least "made it" in the NBA far more than the rest of the list.....multiple seasons of being players who actually saw significant time on the court.

I know some people actually picked them up in Fantasy Basketball. Only other player among the other 13 who could make the claim of Fantasy & that would only have been at the beginning of his rookie season due to being the 1st pick.

Would you really consider Lamb a top 15 bust, though?

Some on the list are questionable, but putting Lamb on the list would have been a major stretch.

No I wouldn't. Lamb just didn't project well as an NBA player but he was a 5 star recruit. I was more questioning the writer of the article. It really seemed like he picked players he didn't like and wrote an article around them.

Agreed.

This was a pretty good list. These were guys who many thought would be all stars in the NBA and didn't come close to panning out. Dakari and Doron did not have near that hype.

Again, I think in this sort of list you need to go with "consensus" 5 star recruits, which Lamb was not. Scout rated lamb at 29/30 4 star.
