Tonight was time for a zone

Rack this all day. This team continues to get absolutely abused defensively and Cal simply refuses to switch it up. It's infuriating. Yea when you have 5 NBA caliber studs on the floor it's all well and good, but when you have a down year and plenty of deficiencies (like this team) you HAVE to throw in a zone sometimes.. Call me an armchair coach or whatever, but pretty sure I'm right.

Completely agree. We allow teams to spread us out and drive. As long as they aren't calling fouls or hitting shots, we're ok. But that wasn't the case tonight and we should have switched up after they got comfortable against our man defense. I would like to also see us trap more......either out of a zone, or when the other teams run pick and roll. When other teams run high screens, I would love to see us trap the ball aggressively once in while instead of always playing soft and allowing the drive.

They spread us out and drove the lane. At least show it once or twice. This has been my biggest gripe about Cal in his tenure. We got beat by an OVC type team

Agree as well. Finally a post of reason and adjustment after the fallout from tonight!

If we played some zone to switch it up, we would've won titles in 2011 and last year. Possibly in 2014 as well. Teams need to be able to play both zone and man. Switching defenses throws teams off their groove.

I agree. Cal is great, but you can't have teams without holes when you lose two or three players to the D-League in a year. There is just not enough "bigs" that can step in and play in the first year and when you have players like Dakari Johnson that could become a nice player in year 3 and he jumps to the d-league, you are going to be thin. Zones allow you to stay out of some foul trouble and our "bigs", who are not very good defenders, need to foul less.

I guarantee you every 5th-6th grade team playing in the state of Kentucky knows the fundamentals of a zone defense. Why Cal cannot teach 18-20 year olds zone principles, or refuses to, is beyond my comprehension !!

Guess what , if Self was as stubborn about zone as Cal. , we win Saturday . And he hates zone . It still should be a strategy to use when needed .

There are times when zone is needed.....like when you are on the road twice in four days, gassed and getting beat badly on D. But they don't run zone in the NBA so you'll never see it here.....

I wish we ran some zone defense at times while Cal has been here but with this team I'm not sure if it would help. Which zone defensive set would you guys think would help this team?

That's just the point. You're not sure it would help. Not sure. But, we both know for damn sure that this team is terrible defensively man-to-man. So why not mix it up?

AMEN. AMEN. AMEN. I was SCREAMING this almost the ENTIRE 2ND HALF both Sat. AND tonight!!!!!! This 'L' is on him... We were up 21, Barnes made adjustments and Cal did NOTHING to counter! I've always had Cal's back... Until tonight! Time to call a spade a spade!!!

I agree. Try something different when you base d is not working, especially the way they hit FTs. Maybe a zone forces some bad looks and doesn't foul.

Willis and Murray can't guard their lunch, neither can Skal nor Lee. Play a zone and put Willis on a wing....make teams beat us from outside....maybe other than Vandy

Until cal starts making these kind of necessary changes in helping his team win, we should stop with the I trust in cal crap I see in here all the time. His stubbornness has been our Achilles heel the entire time he has been here. I firmly believe that quality coaching would have three titles with the sane rosters he has had. Great job getting the players here but his coaching is why we have come up short every year but once and he tried like crisp to give that one away at the end.

The short turnaround coming off the OT loss Saturday didn't help...I thought we looked like we had tired legs even when we were winning big in the first half. We were a step behind and chasing them the rest of the way after we got it up to 21, we just hit a wall.

Had to go zone or go deeper into the bench for fresh legs to stay in man and Cal did neither. Need to rest and regroup against Florida and Georgia in Rupp.

Lol yeah, I agree with trying to mix it up. With our defense being so bad they are going to have to try something else.

This is controversial but I agree

I've been screaming for Cal to play some zone since he's been here. He just isn't going to do it, when it's obvious that our players struggle to keep teams in front of them playing man. I've always said it's Cal's biggest fault.

The bottom line is if you can't guard your man you have to start thinking about playing a zone sometimes. I know Cal doesn't want to but he is going to have to think about it or keep giving up a ton of free throws and having all of his big men on the bench at the end of games in foul trouble or out. Syracuse plays a pretty good one and has for years so it can work at times.

Exactly, and that's what UK is all about, prepping players for the NBA. Cal says that the NBA plays man so he is going to play man.

Some valid points. I've never been against mixing up defenses.

Self looked like a genius in my opinion last game.

That said Zipp, do you think these guys will complain about zone defense in EVERY single post they make over the next couple of years?

Is TNCATFOREVER Zipp? That would explain his post about not seeing another winnable game after the Auburn loss.

Call me Zipp all you want; bottom line, I've been right since day one about Cal and his stubbornness, and posters are starting to see it now.

Bottom line, if you can't play man to man, you can't play zone. TN did a bit of an Auburn on us by dropping several from outside. A zone would have made a bad situation much worse.

You say that but you only show up when we lose. You are absolutely gleeful when you get to bash Cal.

Basically if it walks like a Zipp, talks like a Zipp and stinks like a Zipp,

It's a Zipp.

Lol. Guys, here's a completely assumed statement that I present as fact. Why doesn't Cal see it?

Consider that maybe UK loses to OSU in 2011 if they spent time practicing a zone instead of, say, offense or man to man defense. Or that in 2014 we lose to Louisville. Or that last year we lose to Notre Dame. Or what if last year Wisconsin just shot lights out (looking at you, Dekkar) because they were the most efficient offense in at least 12 years.

But, sure, your speculation is as good as fact, so screw all the other likely possibilities.

What???? That's the most asinine statement I have seen and from how you post that is incredible.
