Tommy Lloyd inks a deal with Arizona which extends till 2028-2029

He’s 49. 60+ wins his first two seasons as a coach. In line for a one seed again this year.

Good recruiter. Uptempo style. Offense/Defense balance.

I’m willing to bet that he has some deep tournament runs in his future.

It would be a huge downgrade from Cal to hire Lloyd. But maybe by the time Cal leaves here Lloyd will have won something? Doubtful. But possible.

Are people blind or just not paying attention. the contracts these coaches sign arent worth the paper they are wrote on. they are broken everyday. especially when a coach is offered a better place and more money. those contracts are just a joke anymore.

Agreed, but he has to prove himself before I want him here. Just my 2 cents

When he was a 1 seed he had to go to OT to beat a 9 seed TCU only to lose to 5 seed Houston the next game in sweet 16. Then lost in first round last year as a 2 seed to 25 seed Princeton.

I watched all those games. I think the list of coaches who could do this job and might be available is short. He’s on it, imo.

Just for the record, I had Houston rated as the third best team going into the tournament in ‘22. That was a bad draw.

Agree with this.

He's #1 or #2. In 2 full seasons at AZ, they have been a 4 seed and a 1 seed. They're on pace for a 2 seed this year.
In 2 full seasons, he's gone to the Sweet 16.

The people saying he hasn't done enough in the tournament also don't want Scott Drew--who has a championship.
I think either guy is a slam dunk, and would be ecstatic for it. I worry Lloyd is a west coast guy, and will ride the Arizona job until UCLA or Gonzaga come calling.

Houston has obviously proven how good they were and still are.

No one is leaving Arizona for the Gonzaga job. Thats a downgrade n every way.

They should have lost that game to TCU. There were 1 or 2 very questionable calls that went against TCU either end of regulation or end of OT as I recall.

The depth of the bitterness about Calipari has lots of distorting effects. First, it states as fact that Calipari is a terrible coach. Not simply less than he was. Terrible. Second, that anger at Calipari makes the thirst for Someone Different a dangerous fantasy. Other coaches must notice that the toxic environment here would have run off 3 coaches in a row, including 2 with national championships in their resume. "Anybody is better than Cal" is wrong and contains future disappointment within it. There is only 1 best coach and the odds are astronomical that he'd want to come here where everybody has their knives out already. Kentucky fans do love to scream and whine. It's even vastly debatable that the best coach would want to come here even if it were a bed of roses. It's also debatable that anyone actually knows who that Best Coach might be. Everyone has failings. College athletics has changed dramatically due to NIL. I strongly suspect that Kentucky has been unceremoniously demoted in the ranks because of NIL. Top tier recruits have come here recently due to Calipari not for any former glory we may have had. And now deeper pockets lie elsewhere than in the coffers of one of the poorest states in the union. College athletics is now non-amateur. Period. Playing for alma mater isn't going to happen anywhere.

Comparing UMass to Arizona now are we? Comical.
Not at all. Not my point, at all. My point is, it takes time when you're the head guy to get things going. K started very rough at Duke. They had been to multiple FFs when he took over.

No idea if Lloyd will win a title at AZ. No idea if Oats will. They've done pretty good for early in their careers. Time will tell

I completely understand. That's why I said he needs to prove himself before I'd want him here.
I agree to certain degree. But, neither Hall nor Tubby had done much when they came to UK

Arizona is a better job than UCLA or Gonzaga, and it isn't even close.

Maybe, with UCLA going to Big 10, but I doubt it.
