Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down

A-,

I thought we got fatigued and became sloppy with defense.

Was fun watching this game. Murray was just insane.

Don't understand how conditioning is bad for kids fresh out of high-school/underclassmen in college (sports commentary in general).
Murray is gonna be unreal here.
Willis is fun to watch and it's cool to see him get some clock.
Skal's potential is as limitless as AD's.

B+.

Also thought Matt Jones did well on the call. Still can't take him seriously after listening to KSR for so long, though.

B+ Defense needs work but, very good shooting team if not tired.

THUMBS WAAY UP
Offensively this is going to be a really, really fun team to watch. We have a multitude of 3 point shooter this year, which makes me salivate at the thought of people trying to zone us this year vs years past. Gonna eat em alive.

Willis is probably my most improved of all the returners. Kid looks soo much more comfortable out there and just playing.

Defense is a work in progress, but we all know that. Hope to see us press more, because I think we'd be really good at.

This team is going to be quite good as they grow together and gel as a team.....loads of potential

Agreed. Really want good things to happen for Willis. Seems like a great kid.

A+!

This game worried me as soon as the schedule came out.

Knew coming off the Blue/White game and the fear we were going to be looking forward to the Kentucky State game, this one had 'trap' written all over it.

Says a lot about these kids....

A- A few defensive breakdowns and failing to guard the perimeter. As good as Skal is he needs to learn to block out on rebounds.

I loved last year's team. But opposing teams would often pack the paint and dare us to shoot from the perimeter. I don't think that will work this year. Too many of these Cats can stroke it from the three.

This team is deep!! I love the pieces we have. By March we may be better than last year.

Thumbs up, for this time of the season.

If the offensive machine looks like this on November, I feel bad for opponents because Cal's defense always is at it's best in March and April.

Last season, the issue was the sticky offense at times. This season, that won't be an issue.

[thumb2][thumb2] This team is going to be fun. Much more fast paste than when the twins ran the offense. Not a knock on them but this will be faster because of the shorter clock too.

Good analysis, in my opinion. I was very pleased. It's hard to keep focus when you're destroying a team by 30, 40, or 50+ points. Murray is amazing to me! Ulis was great. Briscoe looked good. Defense lapsed at times, especially late 2nd half. Free throws still need attention. Still waiting for Poythress to finish those plays, but he's right there.

I continue to think a second title for Calipari changes everything. Contrary to the media perception, I feel a second title would actually make the vast majority of our fan base content, because two titles is what most of us thought Cal would ultimately max out with by the time he left here. If he nets his second title, UK plays with house money the rest of his tenure, and that's scary as hell for opposing programs given the way Calipari goes for the jugular on the recruiting trail.

I feel this team has the pieces. There's been plenty of talk of how UK needs Poythress to be this or that, but I haven't heard too much talk about the state of college hoops is really down this year. I really don't feel Alex has to rise to any type of elite level in order for UK to win it all. He just needs to be steady - something like 8 or 9 points, 7 or 8 rebounds, and great defense.

Solid C, but I didn't get to see any of it and the Game Thread on Rupp's Rafters was mostly about an annoying commercial so i consider this one of my weaker grading attempts.

A C?! Are you Ralphies teacher from a Christmas Story?!

If Marcus Lee continues to play the way he is playing it gives Alex a chance to take his time coming back to full speed.

Skal needs to work, on rebounding.
Lee: shooting
Alex: rehab
Willis: dribbling
Humphries: footwork
Briscoe: everything, except making layups
Mathews: got a lot of work ,to do, but imo he'll be in the league.
Mulder: need to see more
Ulis:not much
Murray: defense, stamina but you can say that, for the entire team
Overall grade A

I'm going with a solid B+. Some room for improvement but looked really good for this time of year. Really happy with the guards, the shooting and Skal, Lee and Humphries. Matthews also jumped out at me as being better than I expected.

It's really tough to assess a team in a game like that. There were some bright spots. The team really seems to trust Ulis. Murray is very active. Skal can be a special ball player. Alex has a lot of rust but we knew that. I would like to have seen better conditioning. Biggest gap is defense. Lots of work to do there.

After Albany and Duke we'll know where the real work needs to be done.

Rebounding and defense are the question marks. I don't know if it's realistic to maintain this kind of shooting, but if we can it will certainly help.

Thumbs up to the cats for pole axing those otawa goobers.
Thumbs down to the jack wagons that made the decision not to televise said pole axing.
May God have mercy on their souls

Good: Ulis, Murray, Skal

Bad: Poy, FT shooting

Ugly: Matthews dunk attempt, Matt Jones' call
