Anyone remember this? It was the old free throw standard in the ABA (I believe). I wish college would give it a try. Basically, you always got at least two free throws, taking tons of pressure off the first one. Make the first, you get two tries to make the second. Miss the first and make the second, you get a third. Miss the first two, you don't get a third try.

It only applied when a team reached the bonus. Was supposed to be a fouling deterrent moresoe than a gift to the shooter. Two to make one applied as well (after made basket)

Another fun fact: The original rules of basketball awarded teams a field goal if one fouled three times in a row (without the other team doing so).

Uh NO.

NBA did this. ABA maybe if it was a rule when they started up.

I'd like to see it after a team has fouled 12 times in a half (or, even better, six times in a quarter). Perhaps as the punishment for the double bonus even.

Coming from behind should require more strategy than Hack-a-Shaq. It might also speed up the game (opposing coaches choose to press rather than foul due to excessive fouling) instead of slowing it to a crawl at the end.

And it wouldn't devalue exceptional free throw shooting-- those guys would get theirs more often than other, lesser shooters.

Love the idea, frankly.

Now that's a good one, might alter game ending strategy of the losing team.

I HATED it. It reminded me of some ridiculous recess rule.

I not only remember this rule, but I think it applied to a made basket/foul as well.
In other words, after a made basket in which the shooter drew a foul....he had "TWO TO MAKE ONE".....

Also remember Big Dan going to the line this one time....and he missed all three shots!
Probably the ONLY time that ever happened to Dan!

Loved the ABA.
Loved my Kentucky Colonels!!!!

Hmm. I thought you didn't get a third try if you missed the first two, hence "three to make two".

At first you hear about this rule and you think "Hell no, that would slow down the game!" But as others above me have stated, it actually speeds it up because you realize hacking the other team won't work as well at the end.

Wilt couldn't make them either, if we did that now Briscoe might develop some kind of complex or phobia

If that's the case, why did they stop doing it then? Not trying to be a jerk. The rule was before I was born, so I really don't know the answer.

I think it would help Briscoe immensely. He's a good free throw shooter in practice and the lessened pressure might make him relax enough to make that first one.

Wouldn't help guys like Lee or other bigs who just simply lack the touch from that distance.

EvilMD......upon further reflection, I think you're right. Had to make at least one shot to get the three tries....
That being said, maybe I just remember a game in which Dan was struggling from the line.
Again, that didn't happen too often.....

Happy New Year BBN!!!

I'd like to see that be part of the bonus situation...if you foul a shooter when their team's in the bonus/double bonus, then they get a 3 to make 2 opportunity. I believe it would slow down the hack-a-shaq strategy and speed up the game.

Probably set the UL program back 10 years.:grimace:

So weird. I just mentioned this in another thread without having seen this one. We would definitely need it for Briscoe and Lee.

I'd rather see players get 1 free throw worth 2 points for all 2 shot free throw situations.

FTs are such a weird animal. I think it's contagious, like yawning. Even one of our best FT shooters, Murray, has been missing them lately (missed 3 in the last game). And even Cal's worst shooters have had games where they hit almost all of them. I remember a 3 game stretch once, after being just awful at the line, we shot a ridiculously high percentage before reverting back to the mean. Nobody can figure out how to make bad shooters good though. If they could, they would get rich.

While we're on "what if's" and rule changes..I think an assist should be awarded for passer if the shooter is fouled and makes the free throws. Seems the passer is getting cheated here.:scream:

I've always thought that too. It's so reasonable I don't know why they haven't changed it.

Dumb idea. It was dumb when the NBA tried it and it's still dumb today. Free throws are the easiest shot in basketball. Unguarded and you get 10 seconds to shoot. Just hit the damn free throws!
