Thoughts on Nashville?

Like many have said, where you work is key to all of this. I personally would not want to live in the suburbs and drive in to work every morning, if that's in downtown.

Belmont/south 12th/downtown/East Nashville all have the benefit of being in town for easy navigation, and driving opposite rush hour traffic if you work outside the city. Not to mention the cool restaurants and bars and music venues.

So traffic and chain restaurants (unless you live in Franklin, it's cool as shit) are what's outside of the Nashville core.

I haven't been in Edgehill in years. Still has its sketchy areas tho. I'd keep going west of there and be closer to Vanderbilt. Back when I was in college, I was fearless (or stupid, take your pick), and tromp down Edgehill Ave at all times of the day or night when I was visiting friends. For the OP, you can get some GOOD deals in Edgehill if you don't mind doing some rehab. BUT.....there is public housing there. Just saying.

Yeah the Edgewood projects is what I was kidding about. One ride thru there, and the OP would reconsider moving to Nashville. Just like when I took a wrong exit going to 6 Flags in Atlanta and ended up in the famous set of projects in the ATL.

Nashville is an awesome city - looking to move down there soon myself. Like everyone else, depends on your work location and what you want your commute to be.

Brentwood/Franklin is a good area to raise kids and have a home. South of Nashville. Pretty safe place, but some uppity people down there.

West of Nashville is Bell Meade, Bellevue, and West End. Relatively good areas to live - West End is filled with college-aged kids as it's where Vandy and Belmont are located. Good bars, restaurants, and apartments to live in if you don't care about that. Bell Meade is where some really well-to-do families live, and Bellevue I've only been in a couple of times so I can't get a good read on it. As far as I've seen, a bunch of older people live out there. So it can't be that bad.

East of Nashville is Hermitage, Old Hickory, Lebanon and Mt. Juliet. All decent areas as far as I've seen, but I know there are some bad parts in Hermitage.

Of course, downtown is pretty awesome. Great bars and restaurants...always something going on.

I apologize in the delayed response to the question of where the work is located. It looks as though it is actually in Franklin, TN. That seems to be about 20 minutes south of Nashville (driving). Brentwood seems to be right in the middle of Franklin and Nashville. Would that be a decent place to look? I figured something in between work and downtown Nashville so that I would get to enjoy the perks of the city (bars, restaurants, nightlife), but also not be too far from work. Any info would be great. Thanks everyone.

Franklin/Brentwood is a fantastic place to live. Safe. Also a big area for "new money." It's an upscale area (obviously), so housing prices can get up there quite a bit. Schools are quite good. Access to good malls and restaurants. Actually, you can go to Cool Springs Mall (betwen Frank/Brent) and star watch. Last time I was there I checked out behind Martina McBride at Dillards.

Downtown Franklin is very charming. Lots of stores to walk around and shop for the family. They have an old-school movie theatre (where I've seen midnight showings of Rocky Horror.......and, no, I didn't dress up like others did) Franklin also used to have a great beer festival where you would sample many local and regional beers while you shop downtown.

Franklin is rather easy to get into and out of. So, if you want to live a little further out in the country and still commute to work you can do so. Towns around the area which are good places to live: Thompson Station, Spring Hill, Fairview, College Grove, Chapel Hill. All of these can reach parts of Franklin in well less than 30-40'.

Brentwood is actually further North of Franklin. Obviously the closer you get to Nashville, the more traffic and crime come into play......just b/c population increases.

Oh.....and Tennessee does not have an Income Tax. The sales tax is near 10%, but there is no Income Tax. And, in general, the cost of living in Tennessee is quite cheap.

I really appreciate that info. I will be sure to keep this in mind if I do accept the position. Thanks.

If you are single, or even married without kids, I wouldn't live in Brentwood. Very much a family oriented suburban area. (Unless you have a total fixation on MILFs)

You would have fairly easy reverse traffic if you live downtown and work in Franklin---no everyday traffic delays.

Be advised that Brentwood is (adjusted for cost of living ) part of Williamson County, the wealthiest county in the country. And Brentwood is the wealthiest part of Williamson County. If you're getting coin from the job...congratulations and enjoy living in the great state of Tennessee. Also be advised that the residents of Brentwood know this, and act accordingly. That's one of the reasons why my brother went down to Thompson's Station, which is ALSO part of Williamson County.Money ain't everything, but it sure does help!

It depends on what you're looking for (house, apartment, condo, townhouse, etc.) and what your budget is.
