I thought we read, recently, remarks by Cal that he wasn't a fan of grad students and JC's. If he really feels strongly about that I'm guessing he would rather go after one of the 4 year players than someone like Brown, correct?
I would actually prefer Brown or Allen due to their shooting which I think we sorely need. Heard Harv Schmidt on Smith and he stated that he was a pretty good shooter but both Brown and Allen look like Elite shooters.
Then he ain't coming hereHe wants playing time immediately..
A 6'5 230 pound guard as a freshman is ridiculous. I think Smith is the best option. You may be right, but Cal likes guys who can defend. Smith is 6'5 230. Brown and Allen are both small guards, not sure if they will be able to defend.
Plus he'll be a 3-4 yr player. Love be a 6'5 guard with that frame, kid could be a studA 6'5 230 pound guard as a freshman is ridiculous. I think Smith is the best option.

Who is saying they can't defend?
Nobody, I was just guessing. Most are small guards. They may be big time defenders, but if they were...they would probably be ranked higher.
Brown is ranked in the top 100 and Allen in the top 150. Would think the lower ranking probably has more to do with their athleticism and the fact they do not have a considerable amount of height for 2 spot in college.
Cal ought to take the senior because he will only be there for one year. If a freshman stays then it takes a scholly from one of the hotshots coming in and Cal doesn't want that.
Wouldn't their lack of size and lack of athleticism prevent them from being good defenders?
