Another new feature -- This Day in (Big Blue Nation) History. Today, we're remembering September 1, 2002. That's when Guy Morriss took his second Kentucky team, coming off a 2-9 season and amid bad circumstances for the program overall, and defeated Louisville 22-17 on the road in their season opener.

Anyone who watched the game remembers Dave Ragone being tossed around and beaten up badly from start to finish, as the underdog Wildcats used a dominant defensive effort to kick off a season that turned out to be very good.

This is one of the most underrated Kentucky teams in my memory, because Lorenzen wasn't just slinging the ball everywhere. He was at his best, playing more efficient football with a run game as his aid, and the defense had their moments. What's most notable about that season as a whole, in my mind, is how much better it could have been.

That team beats LSU that year, it is a special 8-4 whether they got to go bowling or not. A couple plays away from a win against So Carolina, and two Abney kick returns being called back away from shocking the Gators in the swamp.

I took UK vs the Money Line in that game. Won 3K. I played the rest of the season with house money. Those were the good ole days.

I was there. One of my all time favorite UK memories. Don't know what was sweeter, seeing us win on the field, or watching the total meltdown in the parking lot afterwards by the vastly overconfident and extremely bitter Louisville fans.

Little Brother fans were headed for the Ohio River bridges..

Ragone probably still has nightmares about Jeremy Caudill.

That particular game was one of the very few in the series between UK and UL in which the underdog pulled off the upset. It was a sweet win, that's for sure.
