Another new feature -- This Day in (Big Blue Nation) History. Today, we're remembering September 1, 2002. That's when Guy Morriss took his second Kentucky team, coming off a 2-9 season and amid bad circumstances for the program overall, and defeated Louisville 22-17 on the road in their season opener.
Anyone who watched the game remembers Dave Ragone being tossed around and beaten up badly from start to finish, as the underdog Wildcats used a dominant defensive effort to kick off a season that turned out to be very good.
This is one of the most underrated Kentucky teams in my memory, because Lorenzen wasn't just slinging the ball everywhere. He was at his best, playing more efficient football with a run game as his aid, and the defense had their moments. What's most notable about that season as a whole, in my mind, is how much better it could have been.
