There's still time for Skal Labissiere to justify the hype

Needs to step up starting at KU..but he can have a big NCAAT and his stock will jump

I mean, if he were to average something like 12 and 7 and 3 blocks from here on out, I bet he'd be a top 3-5 pick again in no time because so many NBA guys are intrigued by his offensive skill set.

The rebounds are the least likely part of that - but I also think they're the least skill based - he just has to want it.

Rebounding is certainly a skill. It took Poy a few seasons to become good at it. Skal doesn't position the base of his lower body well to block out and get the rebound. He also leaves his feet way to often defensively so it out of position if a shot is missed.

the 0fer against mizzou isn't really an anomaly--he's getting a rebound once every six minutes for the season, which is downright awful

and it's a statistic that tends to translate across levels of basketball

Didn't read the article but I disagree with the premise in the thread title. You can't cram at least a years worth of needed improvement into the next 8 weeks. Can Skal improve some? Of course. But he will never justify the hype this year IMO.

If he had games in the tournament like Lee did a few years ago his stick would jump because of who he is. And it would be fresh in everyone's mind come draft

First, Skal could turn it around and rise up the draft board but the way he has played thus far will stick with him. People aren't going to forget about it. He's just got to overcome it and prove on the floor that those days are behind him.

Second, I wouldn't classify a 6'8 240lb SR PF, averaging under 7 rpg, as a good rebounder. He is a consistent rebounder though, consistently average.

poythress only plays about 24 minutes a game so 6.6 rebounds per 23.8 is pretty good. not great or anything, especially now that he's playing 5, but significantly better than he has before (and yes randle towns etc factor into that)

he has 71 career blocks. number seems low, to me anyway--he's credited with 4 over the last 5 games. doesn't seem right

he hasn't developed at all offensively, although i can't remember seeing the 17' rather than 20' baseline jumper he twice made against vandy before. hard to say if it's entirely a skill issue or somehow tied to his personality

The part of his game that needs improvement is more jump shots made inside the 3 point line. He has a tendency to try to drive it too much and sometimes charge. Although I think his ability to drive the ball has improved significantly since his freshman year.

Never said it wasn't.. But there are way more solid rebounders at most levels of basketball than effective scorers or blockers, which suggests to me that it's the least skill based off the three.

actually now that i think about it, the way he's dribbling himself into that jump hook from the left baseline is the most he's shown as far as getting himself a shot since the duke game when he was a freshman

that and those two baseline jumpers represent actual progress

maybe that vandy game gives him more confidence going forward
