Borrowing from a famous poem, mighty Casey has struck out.

"Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
the band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
and somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
but there is no joy in Mudville — mighty Casey has struck out."

It's a sad sordid day for the former UK and current (at the moment) UL coach.

In so many ways, and at so many times, my sense is that this could have all been avoided.

When RP chose to go to UL over the wishes of likely millions of UK fans, when he could have gone virtually anywhere else without the associated angst and animosity, he ultimately chose self over others - which is his right to do - but one can only wonder how that decision seemingly set in motion a long series of events that has now led to this.

So here we sit, some 16 years and 6 months after that fateful day in March 2001, and the end of his both lauded and fallen tenure appears done.

While some will say he/they had it coming, they deserve it, this made my day, and so forth ... it's still a sad day for RP and college sports in general.

There isn't any joy in Mudville tonight - mighty Rick has struck out.
