The Slice deal stinks.

Like I mentioned in another thread, try that logic out on Memphis fans. We cleaned up pretty well when Cal came here. If Slice gets one, so be it. Part of the business.

I want to be mad about it, but I think if Coach Cal or Slice would have known that Lavin was on his way out and Mullin was coming in that he wouldn't have come here. They didn't know what the future held. I try to look at it that way.

I'm not sure he didn't do harm by staying one year and leave maybe taking a big time recruit with him.

Of course, God forbid that anyone on this board would ever suggest that Cal made a mistake by not giving enough forethought to hiring Slice in the first place.

Of course, if Cal thought he had no chance to get Diallo without hiring Slice, then I guess our now losing Diallo to Slice and St. John's is really no loss. I doubt that there is anyone on this board, though, who would be willing to say that Cal had no chance at Diallo, in the first place, without hiring Slice. But perhaps so.

Slice has hurt the Kentucky program. That's a fact. We might lose players because of him. Recruiting could be hurt by him. Its sucks to lose ya lead recruiter after 1 freaking year. It makes things confusing to players on the recruiting trail too.

Really, folks. Boo Hoo.

Coaches have every right to move on. Get.Over.It.

When do coaches normally get new jobs? July? Mid-season?

Good lord, you would think Slice was the head coach. I've never heard a player say they are going for the asst coach. Yes, Slice gets an edge bc it wa his guy but Cal could steal him away. Think the only real reason he was looking at UK is bc of Cal. Like Aike said, Cal bolted Memphis and brought Cousins with him landing Bledsoe and Wall along the way.

Not boo-hooing. But does bother me that Slice used the enormous recruiting budget of UK, the resources, private plane, unlimited time, etc. to build a relationship on our dime to then stear them away. I have a problem with that.
If he were that great on his own, why didn't Pittsburgh sign 4 5 stars a year?
After this year, Slice goes away. St. John's ain't Kentucky.

Slice has the right to move on, but UK fans certainly have the right to piss and moan as much as they want about him leaving halfway through the battle. It works both ways.

Would be like a preacher leaving a church but taking half the congregation with him, or a computer programmer leaving a company and taking his former company's ideas with him.

UK is competing with Slice and St. John's for a future lottery pick. He's the competition now, and UK fans absolutely have the right to hope he fails as a result of being a competitor.

I didn't even know who "Slice" was before Cal hired him.

I realize that assistant coaches form relationships with recruits, but these top level players know what a UK scholarship brings. Slice at St.Johns can't touch it. If a high level recruit chooses to go with Slice, then I wish him well but he then becomes my opponent. Slice is now our foe.

Cal and UK will just move onto bigger and better things with a more than adequate replacement.

Slice couldn't hold Antiqua's jock when it comes to recruiting. Slice's recruiting expertise has been greatly exaggerated. The lone guy he was on that came here was Briscoe and he would have came here if Slice had never even been at UK. Antiqua was a much bigger loss than Slice. But Coach O did it the right way when he left though, unlike Slice. Antiqua didn't keep recruiting players to USF that he had been here.

Regardless, I wouldn't getting too worked up over Diallo. At this point he's a slightly better version of Marcus Lee. When he starts playing real games next year that has structure and is a half court game it will blow your mind how different he looks compared to these allstar games. His whole game is energy and scoring off garbage buckets from rebounds or beating his man down court. He looks like Eloy Vargas when trying to post up and score making a post move. That said he will rebound and block shots every game.

Couldn't have put it any better. Something tells me not to underestimate Cal. Not even a hunch, just track record.

Talented kids will do what's in their best interest. If that means OAD, both dUKe and UK will get their fair share. With AP, Lee, Ulis and a top class, it wasn't like the cupboard was bare anyway. Some younger fans should try following Pitt or Ga Tech or Illinois for a while to see what recruiting struggles actually look like.

So, I have to ask....why did Slice leave? I mean....the real reason? Did he not like Kentucky or was there conflict or did he get an offer he couldn't refuse?

We havent lost one player yet because of Slice and still may not, if the talk of Diallo and KU has any legs.

Kentucky with Cal recruiting > Slice and St Johns. I bet Cal can get it done. Ingram and Diallo to round out the class.

And jumping on the plane a week and a half before the visits without even giving his formal resignation stinks. The whole matter stinks, it's called a dirty facet of college basketball. I mean what's all about this honor thingy of refusing to recruit a player that has already given a verbal with so much other unethical behavior. You can bet the reason Cal has said nothing derogatory about him leaving was because he did the same thing to Memphis. I wish we could just expunge Rohrssen's name from our history books. Matt Jones may think he is a great guy, but I don't

Good question Preacher, I have HS friends with connections that I wouldn't never have ever thought about changing jobs for based on that. I mean HS friends? how weak of a link is that? Not saying it isn't true, simply that no one prior toi this thread has questioned if the reason he gave was trustworthy.

Cal isn't a main recruiter for anyone. Orlando and Kenny Payne were always the guys. You want to know why recruiting is taking a turn down this year look no further than it's the first year without O. Plain and simple. Slice was a cool guy and a good recruiter but 90% of kids connect more with a guy from there neighborhood who played ball and has survived being shot in the head than they do some slick talking suit. We need another street guy, a real street guy.

Pastner was his main recruiter the last season at Memphis. He doesn't seem to fit that description, and I doubt a street guy is why we got Dakari, Booker, Towns, Knight, etc. May have helped with a few players, but not all.

Yeah this guy everyone calls slice really made an impact in his one year at Kentucky. Good god

The guy was a bad hire, plain and simple.

Yes this is part of college basketball, and we've been on the other side of it before..... Cal with Memphis, and Kenny Paine with Washington.

He was brought in as recruiter only, and unless he brought in Briscoe by himself, he accomplished nothing. All the recruiting he did on our behalf is now working towards St. Johns. I get why left, and I'm not blaming anyone.... but he has proven to be a bad hire nonetheless.

Luckily we have the best coaching staff in the nation still in place, and I have no doubts we'll be fine.

You have no idea if he was a bad hire or not, only Cal can make that statement.

Who here actually knows what the role of Slice was behind the scenes? All I know for sure is that he was an assistant coach for a 38-1 team. It's certainly conceivable that he had a positive impact on the team.
