I am not happy by any means but I am not terribly upset.

This post is not meant to excuse our poor play.

Nor is it to debate Cal's coaching.

I said day one, this team seemed a bit soft and full of role players lacking take-over talent.

Thus I can't be very upset with them when they are who I thought they were.

Cal's reluctance to zone or call timeouts or slow the game down with leads are nothing new.

I can disagree with him, but he has proven his success many times over.

I believe the issue lies in two players.

People need to understand that recruiting is a 3-4 year process at most schools, we have the luxury to wait until the Junior year of most recruits and possibly even during the senior year of some. But still before our current season starts.

Thus Cal has to have a pretty good idea of what his returning roster will look like in advance.

It is no secret to those of us in Lexington that Dakari was an obvious option to return. Also, Booker was not recruited as a potential OAD.

Had these two returned as planned things would be much different. And I'm not saying they should have, especially Booker, but during the height of the recruiting season prior to any of our 2015 games this was the thought process.

And do not tell me all teams lose good players, we already had plenty of good players leaving, these were backups.

A lineup that includes Booker and Dakari improves this team tremendously, even without Murray.

A case for two other players.

Brown and Zimmerman.

Without Booker and Dakari, we would have been much better with Brown and Zimmerman.

Each of these potential tandems alleviate some of this current team's issues.

Thus we have a roster missing a better option on the wing (Booker or Brown) and a much better option in the middle (Dakari or Zimmerman).

Guys like Alex and Lee would look much better, even with their current skill sets, as the complimentary players they have been in the past along side a legitimate big.

This team has complimentary players posing as primary options and two players who simply have not lived up to suggested potential in Skal and Briscoe (shooting wise).

It's a rough scenario, and our only hope is that the rest of the teams continue their inadequacies as well with the potential to be beat on any night. Can we do it 6 straight times in the tourney, very doubtful, but if we remain openminded to the roster makeup and reasons for it, things become a little less frustrating.

Agreed. I really tempered my expectations after LSU throttled us, but then they went on a 4 game roll that got my hopes back up. Those came crashing down after last night. We're a very Jeckel and Hyde type of team, you just never know who will show up. My hope, at this point, is we get to March with no injuries and get some favorable match ups while having lady luck on our side. Other than that, I'm just along for the ride.

Absolutely dead on....go back and suppose Meeks returns, Orton returns....a couple more that never should have left early then several of our teams take on a different look. As it is kids are now coming to UK for a quick ticket to the NBA...they trust Cal to get them there in a year...he created the monster..we have to deal with it or change our philosophy....I like the great players and like the 4 our final fours...I do wish we had one or two more championships then we could forgive a game like last night

Most of our "down" years are directly the result of guys leaving sooner than expected. Some years like 2011 and 2014 we caught fire in March and it all worked out, but think of the improvements each team could have had if everyone stayed as planned.

2009 - Meeks
2010 - Orton & Bledsoe
2011 - Liggins
2012 - Teague & Lamb
2013 - Goodwin
2014 - Young
2015 - Dakari, Booker & Lyles

These are the guys most of us thought would not leave, but did.

My main question would be why don't players like Alex and Marcus have the desire to become "The Man"?

Considering how long they have waited, how can they continue to be weak and tentative against aggressive opponents?

That seems to be a big problem.

If the NCAA ever changes the rule, we wouldn't be getting half of these recruits .. We would've destroyed teams with Jodie coming back..

I never thought Lyles was coming back, just IMO though. I kinda felt the same with Young from day 1. Otherwise, I tend to agree.

I think even just having DJ back this year would have helped. DJ and Poy starting is a solid front court, assuming DJ improved (as he seemed to regress at times from the end of his frosh season to during the soph season at times).

Nice post, OP. One thought that you were dancing around that is prominent in my mind.....we have the luxury of assuming that the perfect piece to complete a class is just waiting out there for Cal to allow him to commit. It doesn't work that way.

We may only take 5 star talent these days, but it doesn't always fit together into a perfect team.

I agree on both those persoanlly, never thought wither was coming back. I also figured Lamb was gone after year 2 even though he should have stayed. I have heard or read people mention them and added them myself.

I see your point but I will counter that we have had but a couple bad fits, rather we have had players that were either overrated or their class was simply weak.

Alex
Lee
Skal
Aaron
Andrew

These guys fit fine - but their level of play didnt match the grandiose potential we were promised by the "experts".

Alex was projected by Chad Ford as potential #1 pick at one time. What if he really would have become a lottery type player?

Skal was a potential #1, definite #2 projected pick, what would we look like today if played this way?

Aaron and Andrew were the #1 PG and SG in the nation coming out of high school, what if they were legit first rounders due to their production at UK?

We have had 2 high profile bad fits IMO. Wiltjer and Orton. Kyle because of athletic ability and defense; Orton because he couldnt accept playing with other great players and clashed with Cal's style.

These are all valid points but in this model if the "experts" get a couple of players wrong or they don't pan out and you (Cal) swing and miss on 2 or 3 guys then we(UK) have a problem. If both these things happen we are lucky to be where we are and doing what we are doing with smoke and mirrors.

I don't remember Alex being projected #1 pick at any time, but I'll take your word for it. Either way, Chad Ford has whiffed a couple times, obviously.

I believe your point remains the same and I can agree most of it.

I wish I could locate the Big Board for you, but as we all learned Ford went back and scrubbed many of them.

But there is plenty still out there:

Chad Ford has identified Alex Poythress as a potential sleeper pick to go first overall in the 2013 NBA Draft.
The popular candidates to go first have been Shabazz Muhammad, Cody Zeller and Nerlens Noel.
"Of all the players I've seen so far, he's been the most impressive and I think many NBA scouts agree with that," wrote Ford.
Poythress is a freshman at Kentucky.

I believed you, just haven't seen that myself. Just reinforces what I said about Ford. It's not just him though, many of these guys whiff sometimes.
