The 20 nastiest dunks in Kentucky Basketball History

This was after the article was published, but if we were able to come back against UConn in 2014, I would argue that the James Young dunk would be deserving of a top 5 dunk in UK history. That dude was gonna cram that in regardless of who was in his way.

You are right. This should be a top 5 dunk especially considering what was at stake.

I would say, "Poor Nate Johnson" but I was there when he almost drowned in the 4 foot water at Kentucky Kingdom back in the day. Even the lifeguards were like, "Umm..." [laughing]

Jeff Sheppard had a great dunk against IU that was from outside the paint going baseline and dunks over an IU player. I think that one was better than the one they listed. Can't find a video of it. Ended up like this.

He also had a missed dunk that was awesome where he was like a step in from the free throw line and tried to dunk all over Antonio McDyess. He missed, but got the foul called.

Some things are not right. Kentucky's nastiest dunker James Lee with none of the nastiest dunks in Kentucky history? NBA Slam Dunk Champion Kenny Walker with a single dunk? Sam Bowie, the man who was drafted ahead of Michael Jordan, with none? The nastiest dunk, bar none, was when there was a 7-foot-plus Russian that freight train James Lee went over and through and almost tore off the huge Russian's arm in the goal. I loved how before the game when the teams exchanged gifts at mid-court, there was a photo of James Lee casually standing on the poor Russian's foot while exchanging gifts.

And how could anyone who saw it ever forget this dunk by Sam Bowie? It may have been the loudest Rupp Arena ever got.

Seeing this lob pass dunk to Bowie & remembering how for a 7'1" player how he could run & jump. For those of us old enough to remember him before the injuries ruined his career. It's hard not to think, what might have been. I believe with every ounce of basketball knowledge that I have. Minus the injuries, Bowie would have been a can't miss hall of famer.

I remember that one. It was fantastic. There used to be a video on YouTube but it was removed for copyright infringement.

I wish I had a copy of it before it disappeared. By the way ignore the Duke's in the previous post. Had to edit it. I use Swype on my phone and I swear it gets worse the longer I use it. Pretty bad when it autocorrected dunked to Duke's. Even Swype has a Duke bias. [roll]

Great video, but I am sorry those are the 20 nastiest dunks in UK history. Heck the one of Dwight Anderson wasn't even his best in that game. Plus James Lee is not even in this nor Sam Bowie.

Before watching the video, this was the Sheppard dunk I was expecting, one of the nastiest I've ever seen. I agree completely the baseline dunk you're referencing blows away the one in the video. If this is in fact the one I'm thinking of, the reason Sheppard appears so far from the rim in the picture you posted isn't that he wasn't getting high, it's that he's on the way down after practically jumping over another defender out of the frame to the left, and #12 (Luke Jimenez?) for IU is cowering because he's afraid Sheppard is going to land on him from waaay up. Watching this on TV, the view was not from under the basket, but from the right side of the court and Jeff just exploded towards the basket after receiving the ball in the back corner, jumping over one defender and slamming down the ball in the face of another.

Not sure who compiled this list but in some cases they are not even some of those players best dunks. No way you can leave James Lee off, what about Davis surely he had 1 dunk that would have made that list and I know Willy had one that should be there. To be honest not sure how you can even cut the list to 20, maybe should be 100.

Russian dunk was talk of the town next day.

#2 James Lee sending Vandy player off floor on stretcher with neck brace after stupid MOFO took a charge on a thunder dunk. Was there.

Turpin's dunk- I think it was a lob- against IUsedtobe in the 1983 Sweet 16, in Knoxville. As I recall, he was running full speed, caught the lob and slammed it on the fly, almost hitting his head on the backboard. An amaaaaazing dunk!

John Wall dunk on two defenders vs UNCheats is missing. James Lee exclamation dunk missing.

Yep, and without question the absolute best dunk in UK basketball history. I've been unable to find a clip of Lee dunking over the Russian those who never saw it really missed out. It was not only athletic but showed just how powerful James Lee really was. As I recall, he hit the FT line full bore and just elevated over the Russian, who was 7 foot. Sam Bowie's dunk was great as well and the pass from Minnifield was spectacular to say the least and it really sparked the Cats to a win, but Lee's was on another level.

Without a doubt. Was there.
So was I; never recall a Rupp crowed being that loud. We can thank Dale Brown for that since he just couldn't stop taking shots at UK that year.

Mainly because I would guess that whoever compiled this list never saw James Lee play. It should read "the nastiest dunks I ever saw in UK history.". The main ones that stand out are the James Lee dunk over the Russian, Bowie's dunk during the LSU game, Minnifield's dunk against Mississippi State and Dwight Anderson's dunk against Indiana. I was there the night Anderson completely changed the game against IU with that one dunk. IU had jumped out to a double digit lead and it appeared that we were in serious trouble until Anderson's play. Also, IU was ranked No. 1 coming into the game.
