Ten observations today

I attended today's game at KF. Today was obviously a flat performance by our team and a gutsy performance by the Mocs. Still, after FL St was beaten by Jacksonville St and several other Power 5 teams have already gone down in shocking upsets, I think you just have to take the W, learn from it, and move on. Unlike some other people, I don't see a need for recriminations after a W, when a great season is still within reach. But we should be realistic about what we saw today. And I think we have to give a certain amount of respect to Chattanooga, a nationally ranked FCS team favored to win the Southern Conference. They played their hearts out. Thank goodness for Tyrell Ajian.

Anyway, on to my observations-

1. Our players' heads were not in this game. This isn't a bad time for our players to learn they have to "bring it" every week, regardless of opponent. This game was put on UK's schedule as an automatic win, and our players approached it that way. That's on everyone. Players and coaches too.

2. We have a new offensive coordinator and a starting QB who wasn't here in the spring. So our offense is a work in progress. That's why I originally thought Gatewood might start in September before giving way to Levis. It didn't work out that way because Levis was better in August. But today we saw the downside of a new QB in a new system, on a day when he wasn't sharp. Way too many mental mistakes and poor throws. To his credit, though, Levis rallied and hit Izayah Cummings for the decisive score. But this would not have been a winning performance against an SEC opponent, and everyone understands that.

3. Chris Rodriguez is one of the best RBs in the country, but CRod got just 13 carries today. Have we gotten too pass happy? You can't take advantage of a strong OL unless you wear down the opponent physically. If your OL is asked to play on their heels all day, you give the opponent opportunities and you can get this kind of a performance.

4. If our offense is going to be pass happy, utilize the RBs as receivers so that Levis can get pressure on the LBs (instead of the other way around) and get the ball out of his hand before the pressure comes. You don't have to throw deep on every pass.

5. We don't have a pass rush. Jordan Wright missed the game with an injury, and Josh Paschal isn't 100% either. Those injuries hurt, but this was Chattanooga. This won't work in October. Brad White needs to get to work.

6. Too many stupid penalties called against our defense. Illegal substitution TWICE? Stoops had a legitimate beef on the first one, because we should have been given the right to substitute. Still, come on Brad. Personal foul. Defensive holding. Off sides. You don't win that way.

7. Aside from PATs, we are getting nothing from our special teams. Our tactical punting has taken a step backward. Our punt return team is passive. Our kickoff returns are not blocked very well. This is costing us field position, and we started our possessions from poor field position almost all day today.

8. Next week will be our first road game. I am confident we are better than SCar, but OTOH a good scouting job by Beamer's staff will reveal a lot of vulnerabilities they can exploit. Let's hope we can exploit SCar's vulnerabilities too.

9. Almost every college football team delivers at least one flat performance during the year. If our players respond the correct way and learn, that's alright. But if bad habits are formed and our game prep doesn't get better, that would be very unfortunate. We have to prepare better this week for the road game.

10. The behavior of some fans in the stadium today was a real downer. Fans ARE the culture. To some people, complaining seems more important than winning. Same for this board. Come on. There is no such thing as "the curse of Eddie Gran". 3-0 teams don't deserve to be trashed. Being disappointed in certain aspects of the performance is one thing. (Today, I know I am.) But throwing the baby out with the bath water is another. Too many incurable pessimists. The truth is, Stoops is the best thing that has happened to UK football since Bear Bryant, and Stoops might eventually catch Bryant. He has earned our support. This was not a stellar day, but we are 3-0 and it can still be an excellent season.

Maybe one other thing should be added. On September 1, 2018, UK beat CMich 35-20 in a performance that was widely panned as disappointing and flat. Many UK fans and pundits labeled UK as "overrated" and predicted failure.

The following week, UK beat UF in Gainesville and eventually beat PA St in the Citrus Bowl for a 10-3 final record. I am not saying this team will go 10-3. But one flat game in September does not portend a flat season. These are college students.

And I still think Chattanooga deserves some credit for playing a competitive game today.

Not playing your best or close too it and still getting a W is Awesome and something KY isn’t really used to in Football. Survive and advance.
Amen.

OH St had trouble today with Tulsa in Columbus. Clemson, playing at home, barely beat a bad GA Tech team. Oregon, at home, is having trouble putting Stony Brook away. Stony Brook for heavens sake.

So when you get the W, take it, be glad, and move forward

Could not watch the game today but listened to it on the radio. The announcers said Chattanooga had prayers that had been there 5-6 years playing for them. Is the correct or did i just not hear it correctly ? Does anyone know if the game is going to be replayed on the SEC Network this week ?

Yeah, talked like they had a few 25 year olds and also all their players back from last year. Actually, a good time for this to happen because Stoops will be pushing them hard this week for SC Saturday night. Think they will be better Saturday than they would have been because of that.

Take away that pic 6 and we lose this football game, yeah if and buts candy and nuts,. We lose to a non D1 program, let that sink in a minute. We are about to hit our toughest run of games. My biggest observation is our defense instead of improving has looked worse each week. The coach needs to recruit some “ war daddies” for our defensive line, we have none ( at least healthy) right now. We will never beat the Florida’s or Georgia’s with any consistency until we have them. No matter what else we do we will never be a real contender until we get a dominant defensive line, not one guy who goes on to the pros, but 4 or 5 guys.

Monday at 11am on SECN I believe.

We did not lose.

The national-ranked Miami Hurricanes (24th in the ESPN poll) are 1-2 now. OH St got beat at home last week and struggled with Tulsa at home this week. Texas got blown out on TV last week. So IDK. I prefer being 3-0.

You talking about other guys I’m talking about us, could care less about what other teams are doing. We are 3 and -0 Great never mind one win was against the lowest rated team in D- 1 and another was a squeaker agianst a team that doesn’t even play D1 football. Yes they are wins and yes I would rather be 3-0 than 0-3 . If you watched today’s football game today and are not mad as hell about the performance I don’t know what to tell you. If you feel good about next weeks road game to USC my hat is off to you. My problem and I freely admit it is I have been watching the same type of wretched football that we played today since 1966. I have been told repeatedly in the last 3 years that we are turning a corner in the SEC, last year we went 4 and 6. We play like we did today and we will not win 4 SEC games.

On illegal substitutions, Florida had two and Bama had one in their game. They ocassiolaly happen to everybody but Kentucky needs to clean it up .

Don't care about any of that! If this team is legit...you put 35+'on this tean and go home !

I’ll probably catch a lot of heat for this but , I’m not as sold on Brad White as I once was . Kinda surprising how bad our defense has looked the last 2 weeks, especially with 10 senior starters.
Game not on defense and they won/sealed the game with the int/td. The game was totally on the offense!! 30+

Oregon CRUSHED Stony Brook. 48-7.
Ohio State won by three TDS.

Point is, yes, it’s ok to struggle with these upstart teams early (when they have upset energy going and before they shot heir proverbial wad).
UK struggled ALL game with a FCS team. Basically a Div I-AA school.

Glad for the W, but let’s not pretend it was easy or through great play.
Monday better be an intense butt kick practice.

Will you be happy if we are 4-0? It sounds like you have carefully studied our imperfections.

When I posted that, Oregon was ahead of Stony Brook 17-7 in the third quarter. I didn't make it up.

And I didn't "pretend" anything, as you will see if you read the OP on this thread. I am not a pessimist, but that is a different kind of discussion.

I think the defense has looked worse this year than the offense. Plus , we have a new offensive coordinator, quarterback, and scheme. I expect some offensive growing pains. We have 10 senior starters on defense. They have not been good .

Bttt

Yes 10 seniors but down 5 starters to the NFL and 2 starters in the defensive backfield and a 1st rounder at LB. Also got to add in one who would probably be a starter and two who would rotate second or first string due to the frat party debacle. We are hurting in the backend of our defense. That hurts our front seven. But I will agree that we need to get more creative with our front seven to apply pressure to help our depleted backfield.
Yea, we should be better, but offense should always have been ahead of our defense this year. We lost the best center we’ve had in a long time but nobody else irreplaceable on O and gained upgrades everywhere else. Offense disappointed the most for me today, but defense needs to get better, more creative.

The most concerning thing to me is OL play. They didn’t just play bad. They got flat whipped all day long. Run plays, pass plays, they got their asses handed to them. The one position group that is supposed to be our strongest looked like they had never done it before. That’s one area where all it takes is for someone to pull them together on the sidelines and give them a good ass chewing and tell them to get it together and play with some fire. Nobody even attempted to do that. Not a coach, not a captain, not even each other. They just accepted that they we’re getting whipped and everyone seemed ok with it. That is bad news going forward.

We will know pretty much what we need to know about BW and the KY defense over the next 3 games. We could literally go 3-0 or 0-3.

But why do you get to magically erase the pick 6 and assume the rest? That pick six was a 3rd down play. So even if it is not an Int....then Chattanooga kicks a FG and UK gets the ball up 19-21 with 7 minutes left. The point still remains UK didn't look good for sure.

this. We were not getting the push in the middle against what should have been a clearly inferior DLine. C-Rod tried several times to follow the OLine for a push forward which never developed, and had to bounce laterally to the wings for any gain. If it weren’t for C-Rod breaking arm tackles to get outside for some gains, we would have lost.

OLine and LB gap control.....this is where UK had truly horrid play yesterday

They are a Div 1 program. Yes, they’re FCS instead of FBS, but they’re Div 1.

….they don’t ask you—-how?…..they ask you——How many?…

Levis needs to get over throwing the ball on the backside of receivers on crossing routes instead of in from of them. Leads to tipped balls & some INT's as well as reducing the chances of a big play by the receiver after the catch.

Well done all around. The only thing I would add is that, as I understand it, Chattanooga had a *very* experienced, veteran team. That means more than many people want to acknowledge, no matter what division you're from. Those teams tend to no get rattled, intimidated, or make silly mistakes and commit penalties. It makes a big difference.

Defense is so vanilla and so predictable. Just like Stoops. Brad White is not that good, but he plays the way Stoops tells him to so he has the job. Wouldn’t mind if he moved on after the season.
