I'm going to make a slight change to the titles of these. I'm going to add the opposing teams and I'm going to write out the month. I think it looks cleaner and I like having that info out in the open for ease of returning to the topics from that week.
I don't know what happened, but for some reason, a lot of posters who joined in the early to mid 2000's (and I had never seen before) showed up on this board last night and were spewing some hate and being even more pessimistic than the fans who regularly roam these boards. If you left for whatever reason, you can go back to doing that. If you want to actually cheer on our team, then stay. I'm tired of reading unfounded bitching and moaning.
Now that that is out of the way, let's get on with the mashup!
- Patty Ice played like Patty Ice. Say what you will about Towles, but he performed incredibly well this game. What we saw last night is probably the closest to what the coaches have seen in practice all year. Last night is why the coaches left Towles in the game. Call me crazy, but I think Florida was Patrick's "LSU." That is, I think that game will be a turnaround point much like the LSU shutout was for Woodson.
- We have three running backs, guys. Did you all know that? Kemp makes three and he ran as hard and as smart as I've ever seen a UK back. Major props to this guy for the work he put in. He's been our feature back in two of the program's major wins under Stoops. Kemp is a special talent.
- Aside from a few eggs, Dawson called a good game. If our line couldn't handle it, we kept a back to block. Well done.
- CJ freaking Conrad! Defenses will now have to account for this facet of our offense in our future games. He gives us another possession receiver to use in the end zone and he can also lay a mean block. I am all aboard the Conrad bandwagon. It would probably be wise for you to do the same.
- Wide receivers came to play. Johnson and Baker both had incredible games. If a recruit's name is Johnson, sign him up. Steve Johnson, Garret Johnson, CJ Johnson, etc.....
- Speaking of CJ Johnson, him and Meant can single-handedly make the defensive line a strength if they play to their potential. Excellent effort all around by the line tonight including a nice bat-down by Hatcher which would've likely resulted in a nice pick up.
- Linebackers are... A strength of the team? Incredible what happens when you get your starters back. The coaches were not bluffing, either. Flannigan has grown into some of the potential the coaches saw. He could play on Sundays, folks. Hatcher had a great game as well and Ware, for all the issues he had, played a great game as well. Ware will be All-SEC by the time he leaves UK. Outstanding talent.
- Our secondary played adequately. MIZZOU went after Westry and Quinn and for whatever reason, they did not perform as well as they had earlier this season. Mauk was able to extend plays and I think our guys just lost theirs at times. Give credit to MIZZOU. They made plays.
- Anyone else nearly spill their bourbon when King was running the kickoff past the 50? Foster and MacGinnis are both playing much better now. Timmons made a bone-head play, but I honestly don't know if he located the ball before he called the fair catch. He's been calling it fair to lure the opponent to him recently and he might not have been able to get away from the ball before it hit him if he located it too late. He's still one of the most explosive players on our team... Although him and this turf are not getting along very well at all. He's slipping a lot. For all we know, he could've saved us from the worse of the two scenarios (fair catch inside the five versus muffed ball inside the five).
- I'm not usually one to call out officiating, but our guys were getting dragged to the ground by Missouri guards and tackles all night. We finally got one called when one of their starters went out. Ware's late hit should've been offset by the Missouri player trucking him after the play ended. McClain tangling with the Missouri receiver which should've been a pick six (the ball was uncatchable unless the receiver was able to come back 10 yards). Overall, great job UK, and another case of the best football conference having some of the worst refs. Get it together, SEC. This officiating is embarrassing.
- Next week will be testament to how far we have come as a program. We got destroyed by EKU in scrimmage during Stoops' first year. This game will also likely have a lot of tension. Given the two team's pasts. My goal is that we don't overlook a fired up EKU team.
- If UK can take every game as seriously as we took this one, I can see us competing for an Outback Bowl (Tampa, anyone?). We still likely drop one to Georgia, but aside from that, we face EKU, Charlotte, UL, and Vandy. Auburn's offense is anemic, Tennessee is currently in meltdown procedure, and Miss St is a.... decent team on any given day.... UK could really take advantage of what it's been given this season. A major bowl would allow us to get a lot of extra practices and would absolutely elevate our recruiting one step higher in an already historic string of classes. The future is looking good.
- On the other end of that, however, is the fact that UK is still young in many positions and will be subject to inconsistencies. We can do it, but it'll still be a battle at times, and I want us as fans to remember that.
- I think UK played its best game since the end of the Brooks era. We were focused and made plays when we needed to make plays. Our talent showed up and we came out loose and determined. There were times when I thought UK had thrown the game away, but they came back and I will admit that I am eating some crow this morning. After blowing our second drive of the second half, I turned off the tv. These guys stuck it out and gave me a reason to do so in the future as well. Congrats on a great win, Stoops and Co. You all have earned it and the respect from our fans.
Mashup Question: Towles makes plays with his feet and Conrad is now a threat. Does this UK offense begin to grow into the juggernaut that we saw in 06 and 07 from Woodson and Co? Johnson, Burton, Tamme, Lyons, Little, and Woodson vs Johnson, Baker, Timmons, Conrad, (our trio of backs), and Towles. Do you think this unit can begin to give us the same output?
Have a great Sunday, folks. Stay warm, stay dry, and GO BIG BLUE!
