Stop blaming the refs. They didn't lose this game. How do we get better?

The team lost the game. Auburn outplayed us.

I am tired of losing to mediocre to horrible teams. This team is underachieving.

There is not one player on this team that can be absolved of blame.

The coaching staff cannot get this team to play consistently, thus they share the blame as well.

So how do we get better? What do we do?

Alex Poythress isn't gonna turn into a beast. So lets stop that fairy tale. We all love the kid. But he is, what he is.

Should they play Tai?

Maybe play Isaac?

Matthews more?

Should they play Murray less or let him shoot less?

UK didn't get one big call all game---I'm tired of this! Cal needs to start working them more early in games.

OP, your too level headed for many of our fans. This loss was all on the refs, I mean, it was, correct?

I thought Murray had made strides last two games on not forcing bad two's but he went back to doing just that today. Ulis shot the ball bad today. Although Auburn was physical with him and caused that .. I thought refs (and I am not blaming officials because it was called that way all day) allowed them to get away with roughing him up.
So yes ... to answer your question. Murray needs to limit his bad twos and his turnovers. Also the staff has to find someone who can score consistently inside. However, I don't know if that player is on this team. I said the same thing with the Brandon Knight team and we know how Harrelson came along, just not sure if I see a player capable of that with this team.
However, I think more pick and rolls with Ulis and Willis (if he plays as hard as he did today) and Ulis and Poy could help offense a lot. I also think that if Skal could learn to run the pick and roll (which I am not holding my breath on) would be a big bonus. He can shoot the jumper and make free throws.
There is simply a lot to work on and not sure they have the players to make it happen. But hey ... It happens when you send 8 to the NBA.

I was hoping Humphries could end up being that post player since he showed a nice shooting touch and solid feet, but I don't know now. He never plays.

I wonder we never try to manufacture some shots for Skal with a pick and pop. Even if we force them. If he gets a couple to go in, it would do wonders for his confidence.

When Cal put that rotation out a few weeks ago, I thought he should limit Murray's touches as the back up pg. And let Briscoe do the ball handling when Ulis isn't in the game or even when he is in the game since he's a better ball handler and passer than Murray and can spot the open man.

I also wouldn't mind throwing Tai in there to bang some people around.

And I agree if Willis plays as hard as he did today, he can get as many shots as he wants.

This team will get better if and only if Cal starts doing the things that they are capable of doing instead of what Cal would like for them to do. If this team was still playing the way it was earlier in the season, they would have easily beaten this team. However, as Cal has taken away from them the things that they did instinctively well, they have played extremely bad and getting worse.

A lot of our fouls would idiotic. Not idiotic calls but idiotic decisions by our players. The one where Briscoe fouled their white guard when they were in the bonus was senseless. They were stealing minutes with him out there and they were trying to get him out, we foul him. He sinks 2 FTs and they get him out.

Lee also did this on a stupid foul near our basket and they again got free shots from the line.

You cannot blame the refs for our own poor decisions.

My thoughts are:

1. It is tough to beat anyone when you shoot less than 35% from the floor.
2. We are not going to win many games when Poy and Lee combine for 9pts and 7 rebounds in 40 mins.
3. How does Ulis at 5"9" get 10 boards and your two upperclass big men combine for 7?
4. Mulder had as many rebounds in 7 minutes as Poy did, playing 21.
5. Auburn shot 31 foul shots to our 18.

Some of this is going to have to change. They cannot control the fouls, but our bigs are going to have to produce more than the above numbers if we are going to have much success the rest of the year. I thought Willis was a bright spot, but Cal is going to have to find someone who can score in the paint. Poy showing up one out of 5 or 6 games, is not going to get it. Unless Tai can get in shape, and come in and show some presence, down low, we might as well look to next season.

The ol "he is a troll" post. Try reading his past post, then come back with that "troll" crap.

LOL. So you skip all of his older posts?

I guess the better question is.... Jamal is this another one of your accounts?

The OP already admitted he tends to only post when he's upset at UK. and instead of waiting a day or two to calm down.....here he is again

He wrks refs non-stop every game. If anything, he goes overboard.

This board has a tendency to blame the refs everytime we lose. Every time.

Good point. This team looks like a complete 180 from earlier in the year.

Exactly. We have too many of the cheap fouls and we miss a rebound and then push a player. It's the same thing every game.

Please man... Tell me when I should post and what I should post about Message Board Sheriff?

Wait, Am I fan of another team or a mad fan? I'm losing track.

Better yet, why are you in this post?

This is the most concerning part. This team will not get better (to the heights that we all hope they reach) unless they get good, consistent play from the front court, offensively and defensively.

As simple as that sounds, the fix is much more complicated because when looking down the bench, I'm not too sure there is a single big on the team that can provide that.

Sure as hell wasn't the refs draining those threes. We got our ass beat by not defending. Refs had NOTHING to do with that.

Maybe go 4 guards, 1 big & play a scrappy uptempo game.

I had oldsports on ignore a long time ago. He op is now on ignore.

People should ignore both of them, but I'm pretty sure they're the same.

They kind of do that at times when Willis is on the floor. He might be playing the four position, but he has the game of a guard. Maybe going faster uptempo may help a little, but it's not going to fix the problems defensively. Imo, bottom line is, without post scoring and rim protection, you pretty much see what you're going to get.

Is that the ol' "I'm gonna post that I'm putting somebody on ignore as if that matters to anybody" move?

Lol

Nobody cares.

Don't click on my post. Don't reply. Ignore. Be mad. Keep it moving.

You can also do all of that without broadcasting it. Lol.

Stop being a weirdo cornball though. It's not a good look.

Yeah. Because it's impossible to keep team out of the paint on the drive. And the only one who can protect the rim is Marcus.

Pretty sure that's why Cal gave Skal every opportunity at the beginning of the season. This team desperately needs what we all thought he brought to the table.

If Skal was what he was supposed to be or if there was another big on the roster capable of filling that role, then this is a totally different team. Not perfect, not without faults, but definitely much better.

Have to agree that the refs def didn't cost UK the game. Just got outplayed by a team that was hitting everything from outside.

As far as getting better, we have to get some kind of play on the post. We need an offensive post player to emerge, or it will be an early exit in the tourney. Not sure what the answer is. Skal just doesn't have it yet, Poy is Poy up and down game to game, Lee has fallen off dramatically last five games.

It is too much to put everything offensively on the guards shoulders. Murray is a playmaker, but he makes some of the most dumbfounding plays at the worst times it seems. As does Briacoe. But, we would be really in trouble if not for those guys so take the good with the bad. I just hope we can come up with a lost option. Only thing I can think of is to try Poy at the post more. I know, he is so up and down and got pretty much abused in the post offensively today. But he has all the skills and the strength to be able to do it. He just needs to step up for us to have any kind of a shot for a run.
