For everyone who likes to claim Stoops is the winningest coach we've ever had, he also has the most losses, which makes him the losing-ist coach we've ever had as well. That kind of puts the winning claim in a much different perspective.
That has been my thing all along with the people who tout the winningest coach thing. The longest serving coach should be the winningest. It's really not the accomplishment some act like. That’s usually a given with long term coaches on both wins and losses. Bear Bryant has the most losses in Alabama history too.
I’ve never been a big fan of “winningest all time coach” talk as if you coach long enough at a place that has little history, it will happen.
And even within the record statistics I always say comparing a coach getting wins and bowl games now vs historical is just different. Things are set up now for getting to 6 being a very minimal accomplishment. The current era of football started in 2005-2006 when ncaa went to 12 games and bowl games have grown to where it only stands as a failure if you don’t get to one instead of an accomplishment to get to one. It’s pre scheduled by the conference now and you just have to get 6 to get into one. And UK pulled out Indiana to ease it even more.I agree on the winningest coach or program. Those should really be done according to win percentage. Many coaches that passed Rupp, for example, did so merely because they coached a lot more games. They weren't the "winningest" they just won more games because they coached more games.
I did some quick math on UK's history back to Byrant. It's depressing really. During that period, we only had three coaches with winning records, Stoops, Collier, and Bryant. Here is win percentage of each coach.
Bryant 68.2%
Stoops 52.9%
Collier 51.3%
Curci 46.0%
Claiborne 45.6%
Brooks 45.3%
Mumme 43.5%
Morris 39.1%
Bradshaw 35.7%
Phillips 35.1%
Curry 33.3%
Ray 23.3%
I'm as upset with the program as much as anyone, but Stoops is our second winningest coach. I keep saying programs ebb and flow and you can't judge a coach by any single year, good or bad. Bryant's last three years at UK were 8-4, 5-4-2, and 7-2-1. We know what kind of coach he was and yet he went 5-4-2 seven years into his tenure and had another year where he was 5-3-2 (third year). This team simply isn't very good, especially on offense. We all over-estimated what we had. The question is can Stoops right the ship. If not, he won't survive.
That's partially true. The number of bowls has exploded which makes it easier to make a bowl game. That being said, for years UK played 11 games and only 6 SEC games. We played 5 non-conference games, many of which were very average teams. Yet, we seldom had a winning record or made a bowl. The reality of UK football is that we have been a very bad program for decades. There is really no other way to spin it.And even within the record statistics I always say comparing a coach getting wins and bowl games now vs historical is just different. That SC team last night is awful. And if they can pull off one upset of Clemson they get a bowl game.
Yes they weren’t playing great teams but a game against mediocre bigger conference teams is better than mediocre level Mac teams with limited athleticism. We won’t even dare play a sun belt team or anybody who might have some athleticismThat's partially true. The number of bowls has exploded which makes it easier to make a bowl game.
