Sonny Dykes --UK

I believe it was down between Dykes and Stoops for the job when it was open, but Dykes took the Cal job. If I'm remembering correctly.
Dykes was in the final 3 or 4 but it came down to Mike MacIntyre and Stoops. We made the right hire with Stoops. He's an average coach but can recruit pretty well to a cellar dweller like UK. And didn't Dykes stink at Cal? How did he get so good all of the sudden?

I thought Dykes was a good candidate. Keep in mind these aren’t Dykes recruits he is playing with. Time will tell if he simply inherited a great team and if he can continue to keep TCU at this level. I don’t know that he would have done as well as Stoops here.
These players he didn't recruit to TCU stunk the last few years and basically forced Gary Patterson to retire (before he got fired). I figured TCU was Max Duggan and a bunch of dudes but they dominated Michigan today.

If I remember reading right wasn't Yenser his OL coach and was asked to leave after 2 seasonss then yenser went to Kansas after that? Of course Kansas was horrible as well

It doesn’t mean he isn’t a good coach but he did not set the world on fire at Cal. The comment was about the fact he didn’t build this team And can he maintain this level when he is the one doing the recruiting.

He was awful at Cal and was fired. Forgot all about MacIntyre, that was a bullet dodged.

Don’t think Mumme went to Texas Tech unless he was like non-staff analysis but don’t know if those existed back in those days.

I don’t understand how Cal always sucks in football and basketball. They’re the state school in the most populated state.
All the talent they do produce, which isn't a lot for the population, either goes to USC or out of state. Cal-Berkley is also a pretty big academic institution, I wonder if they have the same issue with academic standards like GA Tech

Then he did well at SMU, Cal was obviously an outlier.

No one can win at Cal right now in basically anything. Like, Mark Fox may not be the greatest basketball mind but I KNOW he's a better coach than what the win-loss record is of his team this year. The Board of Regents for Cal just doesn't care about athletics there and hasn't for some time. It's got their alumni up in arms but it isn't making the BoR there do anything to make the more public sports better.

Took Dykes about 20 years to become an overnight success. Did he and McIntire ever actually interview with UK, I don't remember?

Yea I don't remember either. I just remember it came down to Stoops and MacIntyre and Stoops sold Mitch on his recruiting blueprint. Somebody else mentioned Dykes took the Cal job before we hired anybody so I don't know if Mitch turned him down or if Dykes went ahead and took the job?

California produces the third most FBS signees according to this article and there's not a lot of football powerhouses on the west coast so Cal should clean up. Either their admin doesn't care about sports or like you said, the academic restrictions are too much to compete.

Who knows what Dykes would have done or could do at UK…

What sticks out to me is that Texas talent mixed with Leach/Dykes offense really pops…it did when he was OC at Tech, it popped at SMU, and it popped this season with TCU.

Something I wish Stoops would do other than find an modern capable OC and let it rip, is dip more into Texas recruiting circles.

Every level from pee wee to high school football is just different in that state. The way they approach it, love it, coach it, develop kids, play it…

Ive said it before I’ll say it again… I’ll take 2-3 star Texas kids over 4 star Ohio kids all day…especially skill positions…

Its not like Tech and TCU are getting first crack at top end guys…it’s a bunch of 3-2 star guys all the big boys over look…but in the right system with the right OC who can coach and develop…we see what can happen

Our defense played remarkable yesterday and to CMS’ credit is usually solid. Imagine that with an aggressive scoring offense…it’s over folks, this program is so close…2 plays away from really taking that next step…CMS needs to let the offense loose and then try dipping into some new recruiting pipelines…

I think he had a couple of good years at Cal, maybe not good, but not awful and then the bottom fell out. As for his success at TCU, he has a QB who is perfect for his system, team loves him and gives their all for him.

It looked like Dykes took the Cal job about a week and a half after we hired Stoops. I don’t even think Dykes was in the top 4. I remember the following guys:

Stoops
Butch Jones
Mike MacIntyre
Gary Anderson

Cal had some success a few years ago under Jeff Tedford, the same Jeff Tedford who was linked to UK at one time and the same Jeff Tedford who is now winning at Fresno St for the second go around. Tedford was linked to UK either before or just after Mumme, don't remember which but I think it was just a name that was kicked around, really don't think it got to the interview stage. Tedford is much like Dykes, a veteran coach who is a winner.

Cal also had somewhat modest success under former Cal/NFL QB and actor Joe Kapp. Current HC is Justin Wilcox who was the DC at TN in the early 2010s, was highly regarded but is only around .500. Imagine he needs to win more games in 2023 to continue.

How did he get so good all of the sudden?
He took over TCU which was already good, plus they had a great defensive foundation, with Gary Patterson being there for years.

Dyke was / is a very good offensive coach, combine that with a great defense and a QB that became the starter only after an injury to the starter in the first game and ended up being Heisman Runner Up....well, you've got a lightening strike.

Right Time, Right Place.

Now, can that defensive level be maintained? We shall see.

22-15 La Tech
19-30 Cal
30-18 SMU

Dykes has had an interesting career. Makes it to P5 head coach, flames out (but it was Cal), goes back to G5 succeeds, and then makes it back to P5 again, but also is really succeeding this time.

How often does that happen? I guess Kiffin is another one that immediately comes to mind, but without the high's TCU has made this year. Kiffin also had the benefit of the Nick Saban Rehabilitation Center for Coaches.

Don't forget Kiffin lost 5 of his last 6 games this season, his crown could be getting rusty.

Kiffin is one of the most overrated coaches out there imo. For all the talk and publicity he gets, he’s an average coach. 58-34/35-27 at Power 5 schools.

As long as keeps pissing off TN fans he's "A Number One" in my book.

Good conversation here, but here's the skinny. With new contract Stoops is the man at UK, but needs to change to his offensive philosophy and do it quickly!
He is bringing back Coen which I guess is a good thing since he was only here 1 yr. The game of college fb has evolved and Stoops better get on board quickly. Cutter Boley is in UK'S back door and if the situation doesn't change dramatically and quickly, they can probably kiss him good bye. We must have the two most hard-headed major program coaches in the country.

Those numbers are above average, not average. Not spectacular, but, above average.
