For this upcoming year, 9 scholarship losses over next 3 years, and Larry Brown suspended 30% of games this season. Brown will also have to attend a regional rules seminar the next 2 years. Third school that has sanctions under Larry Brown. UCLA, Kansas, SMU.

Another Kansas product finds themselves in trouble.

Kansas is the all time most corrupt program in basketball. If you go back into Roy Williams past, you'll find world wide Wayne Waldo and Roy pulling the same crap they pulled at UNC, at Kansas. Still waiting on that one.

Let's go Missouri or Kansas state. Get on it.

Anywhere there is cheating, there is some kind of connection to Kansas. It's hilarious.

SMU should be barred from competition completely.

Well deserved. But compare what SMU did to at least two decades of systematic cheating that allowed basketball and football and other athletes to play without doing the proper class work to stay eligible, never mind the Wheels-for-Heels, the fake jobs to people like Tami Hansborough and the laxity that allowed people like PJ Hairston to get popped multiple times, at least once with a gun and drugs, while people like Will Graves got busted with drugs in a Roy Williams property.

The scale of what UNC did was so much greater. There is no possible explanation, outside of fear, for the NCAA to let UNC compete in the coming NCAA tournament after already charging them, with overwhelming evidence, of five counts of lack of institutional control.

I wish someone at SMU would just come out and say this.

"We will accept punishment once UNC does"

It would make big headlines.

Funny the NCAA seemed to move rather quickly on this SMU case while the basketball program at UNC is still standing after 2 decades of academic cheating. Pathetic!

And this is why the NCAA is the biggest joke there is. I still say very little will be done to UNC***cheaters. The NCAA is as crooked than most of the schools that have been caught with the exception of UNC***.

Several responses on a Tar Heel board like this re the SMU penalties.

It's just not the same situation. Nor is the Syracuse situation. They are completely different in terms of athletic department involvement. The scope of UNC's problems is greater, but much of that is outside the athletic department.

Denial is a powerful thing...

So UNC logic is that even though the whole athletic department is a fraud, because it was a whole school issue nothing will happen.

Like it makes it okay. Quit cheating UNC/Kansas

Hopefully for UNC fans a couple more of these scandals at other places and the NCAA will totally forget the Tarheels problems and figure out how to declare Skal inelgible. ...

Part of the investigation at SMU stemmed from whether former basketball administrator and ex-assistant coach Ulric Maligi helped Keith Frazier to become eligible to play there, a source previously told ESPN.

OH THE IRONY. Because UNC didn't do that did they? What a complete utter bunch of horse manure.

Actually they did not help them become eligible....they made up fake classes and fake grades to keep them eligible and gave them worthless degrees.

Fixed

The penalties stem from an NCAA investigation into whether members of SMU's coaching staff helped former McDonald's All-American Keith Frazier with the coursework he needed to become eligible to play for the Mustangs.

The NCAA found that an SMU assistant encouraged Frazier to enroll in an online course necessary for him to meet initial eligibility standards to be admitted to the university. Then a SMU men’s basketball administrative assistant obtained Frazier's username and password and completed his coursework, enabling him to play for the Mustangs as a freshman during the 2013-14 season.

What also contributed to the severity of SMU's punishment is that Brown and his staff were allegedly not forthright when approached by NCAA investigators.

Compared to UNC this makes SMU look like church choir boys.

Didn't Cal coach under Larry Brown?

UNC fans claiming their situation isn't the same as SMU's.

Yeah. At SMU an academic adviser took one online course for one recruit.

At UNC numerous players actually on the basketball team got grades for doing no work -- Rashad McCants got all A's and made the Dean's List, to cite one example, and Julius Peppers, whose transcripts we have all seen, was clearly kept eligible for basketball and football with bogus grades.

So, clearly, the SMU situation was much worse. Apparently, SMU's mistake was actually having someone do the work. Had they just given the grade without someone doing the work, UNC-CHeats fans would see that as A-OK.

:joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy:

Ok, even if this were true (it's not), so the coaches survive...but guess what, you were STILL PLAYING WITH INELIGIBLE PLAYERS!!!!

if SMU got this, then UNC deserves to basically be shut down for the next 700 years.

SMU football was handed the "Death Penalty" and forfeited the whole 1987 season and all 1988 home games and scholarship reductions through '90. You would think they would have learned their lesson and avoid hiring anyone connected to the TarHeel way.

Holy shit, I was just thinking about the big picture ...

There's a very, very good chance that UNC fans (or any cbb fan for that matter) have never seen UNC participate in a game in which they weren't cheating!

McGuire - documented cheater who resigned after a point shaving scandal @ UNC.
Dean - McGuire's right hand man and successor. Head Coach when the academic cheating was created.
Gut - Dean's successor who along with Dean perpetuated the cheating and promoted it.
DOH - benefited from the same academic scandal and admitted that Dean and DOH advised him to keep the academic support system in place when he took over.
Roy - Has benefited more than any coach there from the academic scandal, besides maybe Dean. Had 2 championship rosters comprised completely of ineligible athletes.
