Showed pictures of Pope, Andy, Pitino, Portnoy, and MKG with varied results.

1. Not sure if I could've picked out Portnoy and MKG (I mean it's been 13 years man and the picture they use....will you'll see)
2. I'm sad for the future.

What do you all think?

Knew everyone except MKG with the beard. Honestly though, I’d probably not know a lot of Cal’s 1 year mercenaries unless they went on to be league stars.

I’m not necessarily sad for our future. When I was in college (94-98), I don’t think I could have named the governer (and there are probably a lot who couldn’t) by picture.

MKG was a tough one, but not surprised by Portney as he’s a pretty big social media presence with college age kids

Agree. Same here. Part of why I think voting age should be 21. Hard to argue you can’t buy nicotine or alcohol but can vote for people who write and sign laws. lol

Unfair to imply MKG was a one year mercenary. He took winning incredibly seriously, organized unofficial practices and workouts each morning, and his leadership was a huge reason that team won a title. He was taken #2 in the draft, he wasn't one of those guys who was one and done and barely drafted. He did everything he was supposed to do at UK to help the team and we have a title because of it.

This. Guy was a warrior and worked harder than anyone. Love love love that guy.

If anything that's an argument for lowering the age to buy alcohol and nicotine. Unless you also propose raising the age to enter the military to 21, raising the legal definition for "minor" to 21, not requiring individuals to file taxes until 21, etc.

I'm from KY but went to school in Tennessee. Looking back on it I 100% didn't know the Tenn governor at the time (or now!). Likewise some of the students in the video may not be KY natives either.

I'd be curious to see the results if they included a picture of Calipari. Probably anyone sophomore and above would recognize him, but how many freshmen?

Maybe I'm just too old fashioned. You should know your elected representatives.

I didn’t know any of the state and local elected officials when I was in college. I might have known a few names, but not faces. I think that’s pretty normal and probably hasn’t changed much through generations. I just don’t think it’s a priority for people that age.

But you can die for your country.
Yeah. I wish the age for that was 21 too! You can sign up and train at 18 but can’t be mobilized unless you’re 21. Paying taxes shouldn’t be until you’re legal age as well! Either make everything 18 or everything 21. Crazy I can vote for lawmakers & die for my country at 18 but I can’t drink a beer, buy a can of Zyn, or buy a 9mm at 20.

Love MKG and would recognize him minus the beard. Didn’t mean to imply he was one of them. But still, I couldn’t even tell you many of those guys names, much less pick them out.

I think there’s an argument for it all either way. I understand why the age is set at 21 for alcohol, because of brain development & its ability to impact it, but then again if you can sign up to go to war, you should be able to have a drink. If you think a 20 year old isn’t capable of making decisions about nicotine, alcohol or firearms, then it’s hard to say they can about joining the military.

Since around the time I began elementary school I could have identified the President and Governor (of Kentucky), and UK basketball players since the age of 8/9. We only had 4 channels on TV and the nightly news was just something you had to watch if the television was on, lol.

One bite. Everybody knows the rules. Portnoy does pizza reviews. Says one bite..proceeds to eat half the pizza. Goodfellas in Lexington ran him off and it didn’t end well for them

Agree with all that, but I lean towards lowering everything to 18. The best argument I've seen for lowering the drinking age (put forth by a consortium of college presidents) is by the Amethyst Initiative. They claim setting the limit at 21 leads 18-20 year olds to seek liquor rather than beer, because you need to acquire less of it and it's easier to conceal; it leads to drinking off campus (in the college setting); and both those lead to binge drinking. One half step would be to legalize beer under a certain ABV (say 4%) for those age 18-20.

Adults not knowing government figures has been a thing for as long as I remember. Videos like this have been TV segments for at least 40 years, probably longer.

Used to be a show on where they did this every night.

I remember they asked a group what the mother country of the United States was?

One of them was adamant that it was China. Another said definitely Australia. It just showed how generally stupid the population is.

It's just embarassing. We live in a country where we espouse government accountability and the like, but can't even be bothered to learn our reps. Now, to be fair, knowing house reps, etc is probably a bit much, but Governor? President? VP? You should know those at all times. Heck, one of the questions the ask in a hospital to check cognition and awareness is who is the President or Governor.

I dunno. It's a pet peeve. I see it often with, find your county on a map. And people CANT do it. Scary scary stuff.

They should ask who Taylor Swift is and I doubt those same people would miss that one. Or, how about the Kardashians?

President and VP, I agree with. You have to live under a rock to not know that. I’ve worked in college campuses for 25 years now…the governer one doesn’t shock me at all.

I’ll watch some of the clips from talk shows when they go out on the street to ask people sone of the most basic questions…and it is shocking what some people don’t know.

I don't get the confusion on the MKG pic. I thought it was rather obvious.
Kind of along the same topic, I used to love Jay Lenos Jaywalking. There have been others since. The population is getting dumber by the year. If you've never seen Idiocracy or the end of Wall-E you need to give them a watch because we're living it right now. It's just been fast tracked. Never thought I'd live to see it but here we are.
