Skal Should Not Start Against ASU

Sorry he is one if JC's nba boys and will get plenty of rope unlike his non "sure fire" nba guys

but, wouldn't you do the same?

I mean, are you telling me a guy who's potential is really high...you would bench him? It's not about now, it's about March.

Coach Cal plays it rough now so we can play right by season end. THere's a reason why he has most Tourney wins since coming to UK.

Ulis
Briscoe
Murray
Poythress
Lee

We're a better team when Skal isn't on the floor. Let him come off the bench, maybe it will provide a spark. Doubtful, though.
I have thought about this, and I agree. He simply is not ready to be a big contributor, and it's mostly his lack of confidence. He doesn't seem to have that "fire in the belly" either, for whatever reason.

Wow , just wow.
I'll be looking for you boys in February when Skal is foing the things we thought .
Cal is playing him so he gains the experience needed for March. He WILL give UK the best opportunities to win when he gets it.

I'm hoping your right, no question.

Marcus Lee doesn't start? Wish we had him that guy is a monster in the paint, every time i see a UK game he's flying around dunking on ppl, blocking shots, and grabbing boards.

So you're saying the best players get the most minutes? Surely no coach has ever done that before...

Skal finished with 10 points, 4 boards, 3 blocked shots, and 2 assist while shooting 50%. Don't know his minutes yet but that's not a bad stat line.

There's more to the game than that .

I think they see that he can do so much more, which is true and I get that but they need to let him learn. This system is different than everywhere else. At Michigan State He would sit and be a 4 year player but Michigan State isn't pulling players like AD and Bam Adebeyo because of that fact.
Let the kid learn, we will all thank Cal for doing what he's doing now.
I hope.

My biggest problem with that stat line is 4 boards against EKU. Although I guess that's his average so shouldn't expect anything different for now.

I appreciate your sentiments, and I like Lee, but he should get 3 points for any shot he makes outside the charge circle.

This team will not come close to a FF without Skal progressing a bunch. He wont do that on the bench.

Skal's got to fight through it and he can't do that from the bench. When the light bulb goes on some you guys are going to look really bad. Until then keep ripping him. He's definitely struggling but he's going to be given every chance to play through it because Cal knows what he's doing.

Still not progressed offfensely? His freshman year against us the one game he looked like Blake Griffin dunking everything

I'm just saying he doesn't have a lot of range. No one is going to follow him to the perimeter.

Idk, there's been some pretty mediocre frontlines win the title the last few years with good guard play, I feel if we had to depend on a lee/Alex frontcourt, combined with how good our backcourt is we could still go to the final four, but hopefully skal will get it together, he is an all around talent for sure..

I wouldn't play him at the rim like a center, he's better playing as a pf taking jump shots. Spread that zone out and have Lee opposite side or Poy cleaning up the rebounds.
Creating space and being physical is def not his forte. He plays more like a SF (physicality) but he simply doesn't have the athleticsm to be a Durant.

How many times has this been explained , wildly stunning that it cannot be grasped . I hope it remains a mystery the rest of your life .

UConn? Shabazz and Napier have not shown themselves with this team.

As good as Tyler is, as good as Briscoe and Murray can be, none of the three have shown they can carry this team as of yet.

Each of them could by season's end, so could Poy and Skal. Will be interesting to see if we can develop the will needed to go far.

We've been very lucky with our one and dones. With every one of them - with the exception of Daniel Orton - you knew they would always give maximum effort and compete. Even Archie Goodwin, who struggled most of the time, played hard.

This is the downside of a one-and-done that so many fear, but we've been lucky to avoid. Skal hasn't even been average this year. He's been really bad. And yet he's still projected as the No. 2 pick in the draft. Some people have an inner desire to be great, and nothing can suppress that. Others don't, and go through the motions trying to avoid injury until they can cash in. Maybe that's not the case with Skal. Maybe he's just soft and overrated. But whatever the case, after the way he was abused at UCLA, anyone with an inkling of competitive spirit would have come out with a fire in his belly tonight. Instead, he was mostly the same old indifferent Skal.

Skal would do much better however, we would have no post game with Lee (zero back to the basket moves) or Poythress on the block.

Plus, I am sure Cal does not see this as a way to improve Skal's stock.

Skal's just not cut out to be a freshmen star IMO.

Think Tayshaun his frosh season.

One and dones who, really impact are usually physically mature like Cuz.

Skal 's weak right now and lacks the motor that Nerlens had.

If Skal is All SEC at the end of the year, it will be the greatest job of player development ever by Cal.

Not really fair to Orton, the kid hustled when he was in the game. He also pouted a lot but he definitely had a meaner streak and more confidence than Skal right now .

Skal hasnt played bball for 2 years other than the 2 months of summer AAU and the All star games, that is a major issue according to Cal.

I agree I do not see the fire either and that could be a bit more concerning than the strength issue.

This is what I love about Cal, he's the anti Self I this regard. He lets his most talented players play through their struggles in Novemeber and December so they are ready by March and not bench them like Self did with Kelly Oubre for half the season

He is projected #2 so who cares about inproving his stock?

You think that marshmallow is going to play back to basket in the NBA? he's going to need 20+ pounds and a new mentality for that.

With that said, he obviously doesn't look comfortable out there. Maybe let him mix in more facing up to get him going? Then have him down on the block once he sees a few shots go in. I don't know, kids had a lot of upheaval in his life, maybe he's just taking awhile to adjust to another move.

Are you confusing my wishes versus Cal's? I specifically said Cal in regards to improving his stock.

And he is no where near the #2 pick if the draft was held today.

It will be interesting watching his development, lots of talent to work with.

I'm totally with you on this. Some fans act like since he's not averaging a double double than he's no good.

I didn't mean for it to be directed at you even though I quoted your post, just meant in general. My bad.

No one has said he is no good.

The preseason draft projection means nothing at this point. I can show you a few of our other players projected high early on a couple of KU players that were top 5 preseason.

Skal has ability and needs to improve, but he needs to play to get here.
