Skal requires patience but I don't have any with Poythress Tonight

So he missed some shots...

He wasn't anywhere near as bad as Skal...

I don't think you are realizing this but they took advantage of Skal to score on us. It looked very similar to what other team did to Wiltjer. The way he has been playing, i rather play Willis.

1 rebound? He hasn't even come close to rebounding double digit. His best rebounding is 7.

I think Poythress tried to be the "senior" of the team today and over shot and over exerted himself. He tried to go outside his game and that's what got him playing bad. How many jump shot did he take today?

If we hadn't lost Lee we would have been able to put ourselves in a position to pull this out.

Without him, Poythress AWOL and Skal being abused by a scarecrow - throw in horrible outside shooting and suspect defense and that's that.

Cal had better start practicing against a zone, because that is all we will see from here on out.

Poythress is what he's always been - a role player. Skal was supposed to be a top 2 pick. Right now, not only is that laughable, he's a liability.

he was playing hard, got some bullshit calls. anyone who ever thought he was going to be more than a role player was fooling themselves

I think this is becoming a reality. At this time Alex isn't ready to lead this team.

Easily his worst game as a cat. Definitely felt sorry for him tonight. Got some bad calls, but made even more
Bad moves/decisions. Just hate to see it.

I thought it was his knee he hurt, not his mind, he fouled about 3 times in 1 minute knowing we need him in the game, how does a senior do that, also Cal wants them to drive and I understand that, but they had about three 6 foot 11 guys in there and that don't work when you force it up against that size, frustrating night felt it from the start.

We need him to be money in the paint but he's not at this stage of the season.

i have no problems with alex. i thought he gave great effort. its tough to play inside when theyve packed it in like the did. I thought the whole team except for Labustiere gave great effort.

blame alex? skal has been a complete no show for 3 straight games. and i mean nothing! alex was our leading rebounder tonight and played like 15 minutes.

I like Alex but 5 Rebs and 1-6 from the field as a senior is probably disappointing to him.

He might have been our leading rebounder, but when it comes to bonehead plays, he reaches a level that isn't often reached by other players at his skill level. He shows no emotions and often appears to be simply walking through the process. There will be a lot of returning players from this team. There isn't a single player on this team that looks even close to next level ready physically, mentally or emotionally.

Alex just doesn't know basketball...constantly getting caught behind basket...hasn't improved his skill set...can't dribble shoot or pass. Tough to play when you can't do the basics

Cal should let murray bring it up now and then. I wonder what happened tonight, maybe before tge game. All of the guys exceot briscoelooked like they didnt care

Alex did some really dumb things and got muscled around by some guys that are probably weaker than him physically but he's had those problems his whole career. Cal needs to figure Skal out. We can't have what we're getting from him night in and night out.

He got put on a poster tonight. He could do that same thing, we have all seen it. He just won't. At this point if he could get rebounds and a couple put backs I would take it. He should post up more. Plays decent with his back to the basket.

Have to admit, I'm disappointed with Poythress. He looks to be fine physically so I don't think the ACL is the thing. I guess he just is what he is and I have to now realize he was somewhat overrated coming out of high school. He seems like he could be so much more but I just don't see it happening at this point. Hope he proves me wrong.

Skal has been the most over-rated player coming in as a Freshman during my time watching the Cats and I am an old man. He needs to give up some of his minutes to Willis, as does Alex. This team was abused in the paint tonight and did not cover the 3-shot much better.

lets blame alex but complete ignore ulis' 2-11 shooting. horrible game for him.

for uk to be good...ulis, murray, and skal need to play well. its that simple. alex is a role player. but i get why people want to blame him

I agree with Loublue22, Poythress gave a better effort than most of our cats... those 3 fouls in the second half were pretty bad calls. Zebras knew what they were doing. Then he just went for the block on his 5th out of frustration.

Don't make excuses for Skal and his 1 rebound. That's just a lack of effort. He shouldn't start until he earns it.

First road game with young players, Lee goes out early, Alex foul trouble, Ulis limited and we still scored 77...they just made long jump shots all night. Give up 52.8% and 82 points and your going to lose.

Poythress is very limited offensively. He doesn't have much of a jump shot, shoots the three very rarely, and doesn't have great handles. So, what Cal has done to make him more productive is to put him on the short corner. Where this is successful is when a UK player drives and draws Poy's defender for help. This leaves Poy open for a dish that he can take in for a dunk. Only needs one dribble. UCLA packed in the paint and took this away. The guards weren't able to drive and dish to Poy and that made Poy limited. It also made it hard for Poy to get offensive rebounds.

Defensively, Poy had to guard Parker for a good portion of the game. That isn't where he is best. He is much better on the outside defending a more mobile small forward type. It would have been extremely helpful to have Lee in this game. Could have really taken away a lot of those shots by Welsh.

We're slowly reaching the tipping point to where if Poy doesn't show something early or fouls too much, we should sit him for the rest of the game and just play Willis, Marcus, or Charles.

Why? So Willis can jack shots in the corner and miss layups?

I just wish cal would stop telling him to be an athlete. He needs to be a basketball player!
He hasn't developed any skills to be a basketball player. Can't dribble, can't shoot, can't pass, bad hands, near zero offensive awareness. When you are that lacking in skill on the offensive end, being an athlete or not playing are the only two options.

Don't confused playing badly with attitude. If you really saw this team for what it was it actually isn't a surprise. Losing one part showed that we are not battle tested, playing with one hurt, and another part missing showed that we are lost at times to resemble a good functioning team. They will be so different in a couple of months IF we don't lose anyone else to injury
.

Ullis is coming off an injury to his shooting arm. He can't even fully extend it. It was a gutsy performance. Wasn't the best game on his part, but we would have struggled even more without him.

Alex is what he is. I gave up on him being anything more a long time ago. Not sure he really even likes basketball. But he's a great kid and good athlete and can help this team. We won 41 regular season games in a row. Hopefully we learn from this. I saw some things that are troubling, but nothing that can't be corrected. Was pleased with Willis and Briscoe and maybe making some shots down the stretch will give Murray some of this confidence back. When Ulis and Lee fully heal we will be right there at the end.

I'll give Ulis a free ride because missing practice can't help his shot plus he seemed to be favoring his arm most of the game. And it wasn't like he was killing it before the injury.

ulis will have a built in excuse no matter what.

skal has a lot of skills but he is such a featherweight that he is a liability. but our season will live or die with him and poythress as well.

Maybe you have forgotten that Ulis was only playing because Cal knew that playing him was the only chance the team had to win. The kids elbow wasn't right and he probably shouldn't have been playing.

If I actually saw this team for what it was?? Please elaborate. We have 3 all American caliber guards, a lottery pick at worst in skal, and working on 7 years experience at forwards. The problem is not "what this team is", we had injuries and foul triuble and alot of guys hung their heads.
