Take if for what it is, an Twitter/X post from one of a popular podcast's group source.

If so, that would mean we're probably not going to play another in-state team this year outside of UofL.

Thoughts?

Personally, I like the idea of doing a P5 and a mid major exhibition, but I hate we don't get to potentially see and exposition against an in-state team like EKU or Murray. A Murray expo would be a fun game I think.

Personally, I love it. You don’t learn anything playing Northeastern Kentucky A&M State. Anything that gives you more of an understanding of what your roster’s strengths and weaknesses are earlier is a very GOOD thing

I'd prefer we play 2 exhibitions against legit teams each pre season. As you said, better gage.

Here's my only problem with this potential pick, Valpo finished 205 in Kenpom. Only Bellarmine and NKU finished below that in state.

Murray, WKU, and EKU would be better potential games.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of finding good teams to play. Just not sure Valpo is that.

Makes me think about the scheduling disasters we’ve experienced the last 15. Cal really butchered home and homes. He was really the first coach I remember who was against them and wanted all neutral site games. It was mainly about recruiting I get it but Calipari changed so much about the game in negative ways. Revolutionary guy, but bad for the sport imo.

He also scheduled more nonsense games than any coach I’ve ever seen. Pope is refreshing because he’s actually giving fans what they want and he’s not gonna schedule so many BS teams even exhibitions. He’s better for the sport. Even bringing back big time national rivalries that Calipari ended too.

I’m all for it. Valpo always seems to have some good teams. Haven’t look in years just what I remember. How cool would a road game exhibition be against Transy. 😳

I’d go.

Another I’d like to begin is Xavier.

Pope didn’t bring back Indiana. That was inked at the end of the Cal tenure. I agree with you that Pope seems to want to schedule aggressively and I love that. Also, good on you for both acknowledging that Cal was revolutionary but also it became negative. Both are true.

We are going to have an exposition with them! I can’t wait to see the opening crawl.

It was a battle of a blue blood and what some would consider a giant slayer.
Kentucky, fresh off a Sweet 16 enters the season with huge expectations with the help of the new star coach Mark Pope.
Valpo, a once proud mid major program is looking for an upset to boost recruiting at the expense of the Empire.
We now turn our attention to Rupp Arena at the beginning of the 2025 season to see how this matchup turns out….

Dun Dun Dun Dun da, dun dun da da da.

Definitely agree with both of you guys on the fact that we learn more for sure.

BUT....

On the flip side, schools like Kentucky (and other SEC schools) pay top dollar for exhibition opponents, and for a lot of smaller D-2, D-3, and NAIA schools, playing a couple of exhibition games against P5 opponents is what funds their entire season (travel costs, scholarship money, etc.)

So I have always found it really endearing to take the opportunity to play these games against schools like Kentucky State, Kentucky Wesleyan, Transy, etc., because of how impactful it is for their ability to keep playing basketball every year.

So I'm good either way, but losing exhibition opportunities will definitely be a hit to the smaller in-state schools.

Beacons? WTF. Valpo has been the crusaders forever. Politically correct woke bullshit.

Changed their name in 2021 so its been that way for a bit.

Tbf, they've changed mascots a couple of times and it looks like they discussed this one for awhile:
Mascot
After years of going without one, Valparaiso University pursued a mascot in 1931. The Uhlan was chosen over the Dunesmen and the Vandals.[11] After debate in 1941 over choosing a mascot less proximate to the Nazi cause, the Crusader was chosen as the new mascot in 1942. The original illustrated mascot was penned by a Disney artist and trademarked in 1951, and used until 2010, when the school rebranded itself athletically and academically.

After years of discussions and deliberations, the Interim President of Valparaiso University Colette Irwin-Knott sent a letter on February 11, 2021, announcing the retirement of the university mascot, the Crusader.[12] This decision was made after a recommendation from a task force created by the Interim President made up of student, faculty, staff, Athletics, and alumni representatives.[13] The task force received around 7,700 survey feedback from the Valparaiso University community. "The task force determined the Crusader is not reflective of Valpo’s mission to promote a welcoming and inclusive community."

On August 10, 2021, the university announced that it will now go by the Valparaiso Beacons

This right here. And as I mentioned, Murray, WKU, EKU were all better teams ranking wise than Valpo. I like the idea of money staying within the Commonwealth.

Cal was one of the most revolutionary coaches in history. To me much of it ended in negative ways for the sport I grew up with, but it’s something that eventually would have gone that way anyway I’m sure. He was just the first to forge the path.

FWIW, Buddy is legit.

He doesn't post a lot of news, and when he does, it hits.

He was the first to know about Perry's hand injury. KSR even said they hadn't heard that and didn't think there was an issue. Then Perry missed the game, and Pope mentioned the injury.

Buddy was the 1st to call Reece Potter.

Now he's thrown this out there. Watch it come true.

I don't know if you're a fan, but the newest Rewatchables episode is over A New Hope. Bill Simmons is surprisingly a fan of the early Star Wars movies.
