Saw that happen in the Bama/Georgia game a little bit ago and of course many times in the past. It just always seemed stupid to me to make penalties of differing amounts of yardage be equal and offset. Do you all think it's fine the way it is or maybe they should subtract the lower amount from the higher amount and keep that total penalty? Like if the offense holds and the defense is offsides, the offense still gets a penalty of 5 yards.

I kind of like the rule the way it is, even though I agree with your logic.

The fact that a legit penalty can be wiped away by a stupid ticky tack one makes the game more interesting, IMO. Many times that rule has helped us. I feel like in the long run teams benefit from the rule about as much as they suffer from it. And I feel like that’s all you can ask from an official and fan standpoint.
