Shooting concern

Should be okay!

I think Lowe will DRASTICALLY improve his shooting.

I expect Oweh and Chandler to be in the gym putting up 1,000 shots a day, think Chandler can be a 42%-44% 3FG shooter.

Jasper and Aberdeen come in on the perimeter as guys who can shoot it.

Kam Williams should be a sniper in his role.

I expect Noah to get some run in some games depending on matchups, etc., and we know what he is capable of.

Jelavic should be able to stretch the floor from the 4 spot as he's a prolific shooter, along with Garrison getting more capable.

Think we'll be fine!

Heard lowe's finger of shooting hand was hurted throughout season, probably the reason he shoots bad...

Better than last year

I think we can expect 3FG production from more spots than last year, that is for sure!

Think we will have tons of guys, deep in the rotation, who can hit shots.

Last year, it felt tough sometimes outside of Brea & Robinson, and when Robinson went down, it got even tougher.

Think we have several shooters on the team next year who are better than Butler/Carr/Williams and even Almonor, who struggled to create his own looks.

I think last year’s team relied too much on 3 point shooting when it wasn’t falling that team was very flawed. We couldn’t rely on defense or rebounding. Those 2 other areas have been significantly addressed so as long as we can hit a decent amount from 3 we should be a very solid team!
Exactly, and whether shots are falling or not, you can always bring defensive and rebounding effort.
Exceptional shooting is just the great equalizer when you don't have the other two.

You are correct. We needed outside shooting to free up inside scoring. Next season we should be balanced enough to free up perimeter shooters with lots of open shots.

What you lose in 3pt shooting should be replaced by what you can get out of transition points from your defense.

I'd expect to see more teams zone Kentucky to start the year--specifically the mid major teams. So they should get plenty of work against it.

Shooting percentage depends on the type of shots guys get. Pope’s system gets guys lots of open shots. That’s why Butler’s 3-point percentage went up from 30 percent two years ago to 39 percent in his year at Kentucky.

There are some strong signs that several of these guys can shoot a decent 3-point percentage in Pope’s system.

For example, Aberdeen shot 41.6 percent from 3 this year during a five-game stretch as a starter after Clayton twisted an ankle.

And Jaland Lowe shot about 37 percent the year before last -before being asked to try to create more offense for a scoring challenged team.

And Williams shot 41 percent from 3.

And Oweh shot 38 percent his last year in Oklahoma.

We actually look to be built offensively more similar to Florida, who didn’t have a single 40%+ 3pt shooter last season. They had two shooters in the 37-38% range and most everyone else was average to slightly above average:

Florida to me is a perfect example of your best player needing to be an all around scorer instead of just a 3 point shooter. Clayton is bucket getter at all levels.

I also think the balance of their offense was key. Even as good as Clayton was, you couldn’t key in on a single player and keep that one aspect held down because they still had a myriad of other scoring options.

I think we project the same way. If a team keys in on Oweh, you still have JQ, Lowe, Williams, Aberdeen, Johnson etc that are set to have a big game against you.

I love Oweh, but next year it will be even more important for him to pass when he gains an extra defender because everyone we use will need to be the most efficient version of themselves. That’s how you keep the chemistry good and everyone happy.

Exactly
Couldn't get shots half the time but our silly ass fans just thought Brea wouldn't take a shot lol
Some of our better 3 point shooters over the past 30 years have been at 35%

I think especially Lowe and Jasper could shoot much higher % than most expect because they will be way more efficient and high percentage shots.

This. And it feels like we’re going to be way more athletic overall.

I randomly chose to watch a Pitt game from last season. I clicked on a YouTube video of UNC vs Pitt AT UNC. The first play of the game Lowe hit a deep three and a few minutes later drilled a corner three. One of the prettiest shots… how the hell he only shot 27% is beyond me. I would be surprised if he’s anything below 35% next year. I’ve wager a lot that it’ll be 35-38%ish

Better front court scoring options, better defense(fast breaks), better rebounding, better depth to wear opponents will all
offset a minus two or three 3-point percentage points. A huge net positive.

Also, another sign on Lowe is that he shot a little over 88% on free throws; anyone that can do that can shoot 35%+ on threes.

He played with a broken finger on the shooting hand. Also, he was asked to do way too much in that offense. Go watch Pitt vs Louisville—you’ll see just how quick he is.

Assuming the upgrades in athleticism and physicality translate to more layups and more importantly getting to free throw line. Last years squad was horrid getting to the stripe.

Last year team was more senior,, older but also less athletic. Yes, we were shooting well , but we were giving up a lot in defense.

When injuries piled up, but even before that when teams would pressure the bigs , and take away the 3 and we had only few options to creat their own shot : Oweh , Butler and Jr and occasionally Brea or Carr.

Our luck of athleticism , physicality and depth was exposed in few games in out of conference but especially in SEC.

Pope recruited this year having in mind to address athleticism , physicality and depth. We have a little bit of everything with the new roster: explosiveness, lenght, speed, strength, athleticism. We are improved in depth and defense.

On paper we don’t have a guy like Brea for shooting it but we are making it up in numbers. A team that everybody can shoot the 3 not at Brea clip but above 30% besides JQ it’s very hard to defend, and if you read the interview with JQ dad, Pope has a plan to improve JQ shooting as well. Plus on this team everyone can take the ball to the hoop. So we are going to be playing inside out with ease.

As far as , experience, yes last year team had bunch of 5 th senior but they were all knew to Pope ‘system. Their experience helped to learn quick.
This year we 5 returning players, familiar with Pope system. From portal we are getting experience and only two freshman , compared to 3 last year. I would argue that this year freshman are also an upgrade,

So overall, yes we don’t have Brea but we are checking out so many other boxes that I think we will be fine.

Plus all these guys have something to prove and are hungry, That’s great news for coaching staff!

Let’s go!
