I thought it would be interesting to take a look at these.

It's hard to really give a true comparison because we have played 3 games fewer than most, but the numbers still are telling.

UK is actually 7th in batting average.

We are last in runs. On average, we are probably right around last at an average of 5.5 runs per game.

We are last in home runs with 8. The next fewest has 11.

We are 2nd to last in walks with 33.

We average about 8 strikeouts a game.

We are second in pitching at just 2.10 era.

We are actually 2nd in fielding percentage, although I think we make a lot more mistakes than what shows up on the stat sheet.

Thanks for all that you do and the time you put in for this board Comebak. That being said. Let’s take a deeper look.

A 2.10 ERA is impressive regardless of competition. Kentucky’s pitchers seem to be attacking more than in the past which has lead to somewhat impressive strikeout numbers. 100 ks to just 17 walks is nice. But, UK has also hit 13 batters through 9 games. Need to get that fixed.

Offensively, a .289 average is respectable. 8 home runs through 9 games. Not bad. But this team seems to be feast or famine with the long ball. As I said in another thread, if Kentucky isn’t hitting the long ball, they seem to struggle to put hits together to score runs. That’ll be an issue come conference play.

Offensively,

Pitching is outstanding. It is not the issue. Will it stay that way? We will see. However, so far, no major complaints with it. Also, oddly... it is the older guys largely letting us down while the freshmen and sophomores are dealing.

My screw up. I hit send before I was finished. Pitching has definitely been the surprise so far. But, I’m still bullish when it comes to how those arms are going to fare when it comes to SEC play. And you’re right. The older guys seem to be having the most trouble. The Jimmy Ramsey experiment needs to end.

But, I sorta feel for Cole Daniels. I think UK has really misused him the last two years. Yeah, he’s a good situational guy but it’s hard for him to find any sense of rhythm. His body language on the mound yesterday was really telling to me.

I agree. I don't know why the hell we have only used him as basically a one hitter type guy. He showed he can go more and really dominate hitters. We should have been doing that all along.

Pitching definitely has the arms/depth to be adequate in the SEC imo. I just don’t see the bats in the lineup to compete with a lot of teams. Need guys like Rhodes, Collett to step up and the bottom of the order to start producing in some way.

All in all I don’t see us finishing any higher than bottom third in the conference which is disappointing in year 5 of Ming.

Probably even more disappointing given that Tennessee is in year 3 of Vitello and they are a top 15 team. Auburn is in year 6 of Butch Thompson and they went to a CWS in 2018. Brad Bohannon is at Alabama and they are now a 10-2 with one of the best young arms in the game in just his 4th year.

These were teams that were below us when Mingione arrived and now they have passed up by, or are on the cusp of doing so.
