We are through week 4 and UK sits at 6-6. This upcoming week is the halfway point of SEC play, so we have a pretty good indicator of how we’re doing. UK needs to avoid being swept this weekend, and ideally takes 2 of 3. Do either of those things and we’re sitting all right going forward.

UK is currently hitting .253 in SEC play, which ranks 8th overall. Those numbers are up from a weekend ago, where we were just hitting around .240. What I find interesting is the run total and how that averages. UK is right around 5.5 runs per game, which is also good for 8th. What is interesting is you have teams like TAMU, who are hitting .260 but have only scored 57 runs (4.75 per game). So, they have the 4th best batting average and are 12th in runs scored. Overall, it looks like UK has really struggled on the extra base hits. If you count, doubles, triples and home runs, UK’s total is 29. That ties us for last in extra base hits with Missouri. Vanderbilt leads the league with 46. UK is actually doing a great job putting the ball in play and we have the 3rd fewest strikeouts. A stat I love to see… we lead the league in stolen bases, by 6, which is a fairly wide margin. We had a good chunk yesterday. Walk numbers could be better as UK is tied for 9th in the league.

In pitching UK has a 5.01 ERA, which ranks 6th best in the league. It seems like the pitching is pretty solid, but one thing that UK really lacks is a dominant pitcher. We just don’t have one. I think you see this in strikeout numbers. UK is one of the worst teams in strikeout numbers, at 95, which puts us in 12th. So, UK relies a lot more on the defense to get outs rather than getting strikeouts. We are doing a pretty solid job of limiting extra base hits, as we rank tied for 4th in fewest allowed. However, we are tied with LSU for giving up the most triples with 4. Not sure if that is a result of KPP or what, but it is interesting. Overall, pitching is pretty decent. Would like to see UK get the batting average against (8th ranked) down and increase the number of Ks, but overall can’t be terribly made with the numbers. That being said… UK has faced the 14th, 13th, and 10th best hitting teams by batting average, so it won’t get much easier.

Defense is tied for 7th overall with a .975 fielding percentage.

I really like the analysis you provide. Please keep it going. Pitching stats are better than I thought. My issue with our pitching is we walk 4-6 a game and hit another 3-4. That’s a lot of free base runners. Sprinkle in a few hits and there’s a lot of runs.

I fear the pitching might get worse as we face better hitting opponents. I might do a deeper dive and try to compare the batting average we gave up versus the opponent average now. Also look at how our bats did against opposing pitchers versus their average.

For instance, LSU was hitting terribly prior to this weekend, but they feasted on our pitching.

I guarantee you are right. We have some really good teams waiting on us ( TN, FL, Vandy, USC). Bottom line we have to get a talent upgrade or we’ll be in the lower half of the SEC indefinitely. How much longer do you give Mingione?

At best, next year. If he doesn't make NCAA in either, cut him loose. Would do it this year, but might be willing to give him one more with the young pitchers and the newer assistants.

Cut him loose ! How much shot would you give us getting William's to leave U6 to come be an SEC HC? He's 52 so the time should be right if he has those aspirations.
