Analysis: Coach Antigua has had a rough start to this point in his second season at South Florida. His Bulls enter this game having played 5 home games but they've lost 4 of 5. This game is being played in Miami, so they still won't have to play outside state of Florida.

The first thing that jumps out at you about South Florida is the good size and strength they have throughout the line-up. This is a big front line that should be a challenge for UK. 6-11 255 and 6-8 250 is nothing to sneeze at. Add in the 6-8 Louisville transfer Nunez at the 3 spot and this is the biggest team UK has faced. Despite the fact that they've lost 4 of 5, they still have a nearly +6 rebounding edge over their opponents this season.

The leading scorer for the Bulls has come off the bench in 4 of 5 games this season. Jahmal McMurray has scored 13.5 points per game. He's a 6 foot freshman guard who is talented and is going to be pretty good for Antigua, but he's not very efficient right now and is a volume shooter. Ulis will drive him nuts, but he will still likely take a bunch of shots, even if contested.

The backcourt of South Florida really struggles shooting the ball. That's been one of their biggest issues on the season. Roddy Peters is their point guard and he leads the team with 5.8 assists, but he has shot the ball terribly on the season so far. He's only 1-11 from 3pt range so far, and most of his 11 points per game have come on drives into the lane and short jumpers and floaters. His running mate is Morillo, the 6-5 senior who plays more for ball handling purposes than for offense. He's second on the team in assists but his shooting has not been good at all this season.

The front court, as I said above, is the strength of this team. Their guards will look to feed the post as often as possible, and the team will crash the offensive glass. They really have to crash the glass because of the poor shooting across the board. They will be a challenge in the post for our young and thin frontcourt. Angel Nunez is the best scorer of their forwards, but Jaleel Cousins and Chris Perry are both a load in the paint, weighing in at 250+ each. The Cats will have to work to keep these guys off the glass.

When you look at this South Florida front line, you have to wonder how they've lost 4 of 5 games to start the season. I think the answer may be more a matter of a lack of skill than a lack of athleticism. That 39.5% FG shooting is what kills them. Now, UK has played the same teams, and they're all decent teams, but none of them is some juggernaut defensively. The fact is, these guys just can't shoot it very well.

A big focus for this game for Kentucky must be rebounding. Our Cats have given up too many easy points on offensive rebounds this season. Against this South Florida team, offensive rebounding is where they score a good portion of their points. Their first shot percentage is not going to be good, so if we can put a body of their big men and keep them off the glass, this game becomes academic.

Prediction: Kentucky 87 South Florida 61

Wasn't Rodney Peters a pretty highly rated recruit a couple years ago? I think he originally went to Maryland didn't he?

Thanks for the write up! I'll be down in Miami tomorrow with the family to see them in person and am hoping our guys are on from 3 point land and play like the number 1 team in the country.

That roster is pretty good IMO. Looking at their schedule and Antiguas overall record thus far I would say he kind of sucks worse than I thought he would.

It's true that they have some talent and seem to have underachieved. They have a bunch of athletes but they aren't very skilled. They are also very loose with the ball. It goes to show, it doesn't matter how athletic a team you have, if you average under 40% from the field, you're gonna lose.
