Analysis: Boston comes into Rupp Arena late Tuesday night with a 2-2 record, fresh off a road win over South Florida 78-66 on Saturday night. In games against common opponents, Albany and NJIT, Boston went 1-1. They got a home game with Albany and won 69-64. They had to go on the road to NJIT and lost 66-78. Coming into Rupp, I'm sure they're feeling pretty good with a road win under their belts, but this will be a tall task for the Terriers.
Boston is a fairly well-balanced team, though the key to their game is their guard play. The 3-guard starting line-up combines for 45.6 of their points, 9.0 assists, and 39 of 45 made threes on the season. This team is another one that will make those shots if left open. They shoot 41.7% from 3 as a team. Sounds familiar. They can stay within shouting distance with their 3pt range.
Their point guard is Kyle Forman and he has 5.7 assists per game on the season so far. He doesn't lead the team in scoring, but he's definitely a key scorer and he leads the team in 3pt shooting percentage, at nearly 54%. He doesn't shoot it as much as his backcourt mates, but he makes them when given the chance, and he's also excellent at crashing the defensive boards though he's only 6-1. The leading scorer on the team is John Papale, a 6-3 senior guard who is scoring 17.8 points per game. He's also a marksman from 3pt range, shooting it at 51.4%. He's second on the team in assists The third guard in the starting line-up is Cheddi Mosely, another 6-3 shooting guard. He's not as good a shooter as the other guards but he gets his 14 points a game on volume shooting. He likes to shoot it and rarely gets an assist.
In the front court, the Terriers are led by a pair of seniors of similar height and build. Nathan Dieudonne is 6-7 235 and Justin Alston is 6-8 230. Dieudonne is a bit better scorer (he leads the team in rebounding) and rebounder but Alston can hold his own. Neither of these guys have a lot of length but they're both strong. They're not shot blockers or high risers but they can carve out some space and hold position.
From the bench Boston doesn't have much in the way of scoring. They have a 6-11 center who started their last game out named Blaise Mbargorba (try pronouncing that name). He's a 225lb junior and at 6-11 seems he'd be a sure thing to start. But he's only played 8 minutes a game and has yet to score a single point or grab a single rebound. The only thing he's done is to commit 4 fouls. The best players from the bench are Nick Havener, a 6-8 225 forward who actually leads the team in blocks and scores 5 pts a game, and 6-3 guard Will Goff who doesn't shoot much but is hitting 40% of his threes in limited time.
Boston U is a team that has the potential to be pesky and frustrating to these Cats if they come out flat with visions of #1 rankings dancing in their heads. (I hope they haven't been reading their press clippings over the last week) But this could be a game that turns into a blowout as well. Truth be told, UK should win this one going away. But I fully expect Boston to have a player go off from three point range like it seems all these teams have.
I think our Cats learned a lesson from that Wright State game the other night. And I'm sure Calipari drilled it into their brains over the last several days. Anyone can beat you if you come with less than your best. All these teams have shooters and they will not hesitate to jack one up in front of 23,000 at Rupp Arena. For this reason, I expect strong focus from our Cats in this game and for the game to be over by the half.
