Recovering from a torn ACL, Kentucky forward Alex Poythress is running and dunking in practice -- though he's still not active in live competition, John Calipari said Monday.

"He's the key," Calipari said of Poythress, who was injured in early December and missed the final three months last season.

The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 11.8 points and 5.7 rebounds during a six-game exhibition summer tour of the Bahamas in 2014. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.8 rebounds in eight games last season.

His health will be key. I expect him to be the leader along with Ulis . Poythress in the 2014 final 4 run was THE man in the clutch when it came to small plays - a deflection here , a rebound there ect , and that is what we need from him . His only weakness really is his confidence at times IMO .When he wants to dominate he can and will.

That run in 2014 was what I thought was the light finally coming on. I remembered how pissed I was when Alex got called for a charge on a baseline spin move against UConn. Not only was that a horrible call, but it zapped Alex and the teams confidence they had making what seemed to be a comeback.

I hope plays with a mean streak and has an outstanding year and leads the team to another title.

Ugh, God, I had managed to erase that flop from my memory. That one was a backbreaker.

This. That play probably cost us a title. Like JWat said, it was a backbreaker. Biggest play of that game IMO.

Horrible, Horrible Call!!!!!!! If I recall correctly, we were making a big run, and Poy makes the basket and should have gotten an and 1 to cut the lead to 2 or 3. Further, I'm pretty sure the defender had a foot out of bounds when he flopped. Was not even a legal guarding position. Anyhow, the basket is waived off and UConn goes down and hits 3 by that goofy Niles Giffey or whatever his name was. Total game changer. Instead of down 2, I think we went down by 7 or 8. KILLER Call. Can't tell me a call doesnt change a game, because that call certainly changed the game. A very close second to the Napier untouched flop 3 years earlier under similar circumstances

Let's hope Poythress is fully healthy this coming season. No more letting others shine. It's his turn to lead and show what he really has. As long as he's healthy, I think he will have his best year of his career at Kentucky.

Here's to a speedy and full recovery. Alex is going to be huge for us this season, and he deserves a championship before he leaves.

I wish the fellow well. Think he will be full strength come our match up. Kid's a class act and a warrior. God speed on his recovery.

I agree. Great young man!!!! One of my all time favorites. We would have had one last year with him healthy. No way the Wisconsin guy goes off with ploy guarding him. No way. Anyhow, I sure am rewriting history in this thread.

Gotta be patient. They'll bring him back when he's ready and safe. Might be a bit of ring rust at first. Hopefully will be playing the best ball of his career by February when we'll need him most. If sooner, then better.

Nice that he is 6'9" and has now grown 2 inches! That should really help front line! What a blessing in disguise! Patience and maturity really pays off over time.
