These two teams have guys that have been in the program for multiple years, whether they started in the portal or in HS.

Clayton didn’t just come in from the portal, he has been in the Florida program for two years. Richard has been in the Florida program for 3 years. The two big Sophomores for UF were HS recruits that have been in the program for two years.

For Houston, Cryer is in his second year with Houston out of the portal. Sharp is in his third year with them out of HS. Roberts is a fifth year Senior that has been with Houston his entire college career.

In the age of the portal, the key is not getting the best portal players, it’s getting the best players, regardless of where they come from, and then getting them to come back for multiple years.

Player retention and player development. That’s the key to winning a title.

Agree…forgot to mention retention in my post. Great response!

Very encouraging post in a time of need for a lot of our fanbase. Hopefully will talk some off the ledge. Appreciate it!

Based on those numbers, we should be the dominant team in the country by the time Perry, Noah and Chandler are seniors. And we likely will be, because by that time we are going to have a good mix of veteran leadership and talent.
Yes. Look at the Sophomore class right now:

Chandler
Noah
Perry
Williams

Plus we might add another with Yates.

Then you have the Freshmen Johnson, Moreno, and Lewis.

And next year, we add 2-3 more Freshmen and maybe a 2-3 more multi year portal guys.

There’s no guarantee they will all stay, but that’s a foundation you lay and hope they stick around.

And then you have player development and you’ve got a Houston/Florida/Auburn type team by year four.

Getting the best portal players is equivalent to getting the best high school players. One and done portal going to be hard to win a title as is one and done high schoolers. Pope is going after guys who can stay multiple years and contribute to a TEAM!! Let’s all myself included relax and enjoy the process. Pope can coach circles around Shyer

Exactly.

Pope could have added a bunch of Seniors from the portal to make sure he could compete next season, but instead he grabs a Sophomore and a Junior and is looking to add a couple more guys with multiple years of eligibility left.

Pope is playing the long game, because that’s how you win titles. See the last several champions, including this year’s champ (Houston or Florida) and you see the common denominator for them is player retention and development.
