Rock…QB question…

So Allen is NEVER going to be the starter? Did he just not develop or was he perhaps slightly overrated in HS? 4* QBs at UK generally start fairly early in their career. Maybe that's a thing of the past, also.

Depth and competition is a good thing, but I have to be honest I don’t think Allen has the arm strength to be an SEC starter just based off the small sample size we have seen and i say that with the understanding a lot can happen over the two years he’s been watching so we will see

Allen's limitations are purely physical. Just doesn't have the size or sturdy build. Smart kid, great character,, learns offenses, throws very accurate. His God given body and frame just isn't the size needed to last playing SEC defenses. Can't entrust the starting job to someone who won't last long into the season.

Allen doesn’t have the arm strength. It’s pretty obvious if you watch him in warmups/at halftime. Dusty Bonner had a stronger arm.

Completely jmo but the new ocs and their offenses just put us in an entirely different league of potential QB. These offenses need a QB with arm talent to use the entire field and the offenses allow such a QB to showcase his talent. Cherry on top is that about half the offenses in the NFL run a version of our offense, so it's an easy scout for NFL folks.

I hate it for Beau but it just is what it is.

I think this is more or less right. There is nothing wrong with Beau Allen. He isn't a small QB. His arm strength is better than some people think. Furthermore, Beau is smart. But we can't expect every player to be dominant as a freshman or sophomore. Most players need a certain amount of development, and it helps if there is some continuity. Allen has now learned under three OCs, and that does not help. By the time Allen was making some progress, Will Levis transferred here.

If Levis went down with an injury in 2022, I don't think Allen would embarrass himself. He will never be the running threat that Levis is, and I don't think he can improvise like Levis. He can't throw the deep ball quite like Levis. But he is accurate and intelligent, and he has some skills. If you believe in next man up, Allen is a valuable guy to have around.

But let me be among the first to say this here. Deuce Hogan is no slouch. Given some time with Coach Scangarello, Hogan has size and lots of upside. Nice frame. I don't know much about his coverage recognition skills, but that's why they need development. I'm glad Kirk Ferentz has a big mouth.

Interesting comments. I've only seen BA in very limited action as most others have. Doesn't have a cannon like Levis, that's for sure. But, I don't have enough looks at him to know if his arm is just not SEC caliber. Seems to be the 2nd string guy, so the staff has some confidence in him, apparently. Certainly, there is a pretty big range of arm talent in the NFL. I would be concerned if next year's plan is to pluck a starting QB from the transfer portal. That would be disappointing if the staff doesn't have enough confidence in the QB room that they feel we have to go to the portal.

Allen could be UK’s version of Mac Jones. (I’m not saying he’s that good, but following same college route.) Jones sat behind a couple Heisman candidates, bid his time, then excelled his sr year. Now, there’s little doubt Stoops will dip into portal for QB recruit if he doesn’t get the one he wants from the hs ranks. You need a good QB recruit in every class. But, I think it will be an underclassmen.

The fact Allen didn’t transfer out this spring speaks volumes to me. I think Stoops and new OC re-recruited him by honest conversations with where they see him after Levis. (I hope Levis doesn’t miss a snap due to injury, but every team knows how quickly you can be dependent on backup.) Also, I think Stoops would love to hand the reigns over to an upper classman next fall. Beau doesn’t have a cannon like Levis. However, I do think he will be accurate and make good decisions. I agree with others about him needing to add 25-30 lbs of good weight.

Allen not transferring this year should tell us a lot regarding Stoops’ plans. I don’t think Allen would stick around to be a 5 year back up. Additionally, I think Stoops has earned the players’ trust by being honest with them about their future at UK.

Thanks. Maybe that's why we're being able to sign quality WR's: They expect/trust we'll develop or import a quality thrower. They just don't know today who that will be.

I think so. The other piece is after what we did for Levis, we should be an extremely attractive destination for a transfer QB. Some undervalued guys out there with five star talent lurking under the surface. Maybe we just got that guy in the form of the transfer from Iowa. I don't think so but never know

Allen has a softer arm. And in the SEC and with this offense they are looking for guys that can throw wide, long, etc...to stretch the field out for their running game.

My understanding is Allen just wants to graduate from UK regardless of his athletic career. That could change, but he knows he isn't an NFL guy. So him not transferring doesn't really have meaning. I mean, maybe he does that after he graduates for a last year or something. But that is largely irrelevant in terms of indicating anything. And there really isn't anything for the staff to say to him at this point because they really don't have a lot of options beyond Levis at this point.

He’s roughly the same size as the Georgia QB who led his team to a championship. I think he can play here but unfortunately he won’t get the chance.

I haven’t heard this from insiders or read it. (People close to Beau and family may know this to be fact.) Girls also have a way of keeping players from transferring;- ) I just will not be surprised if he’s our starting QB next year.

It’s a catch 22 for Stoops. I know they want to pad Levis’s stats and may leave him in longer in some non-conference games. But, I’d also like to see Beau get some quality minutes when we’re not just grinding clock to end a game. I’d like to see him for a half with 1st team line/receivers.

Either way, I agree with some posters above that we should be an attractive landing spot for a top tier transfer.

Mark Stoops has never in 10 yrs been a run the scoreboard up, rack up starters stats coach. Whoever is #2 qb will get to play 1st 3 homegames in Sept.

Like I said before a good coach can hide a weakness ! There probably aren't 3 other QBS in the SEC with Levis's skill if any ! Allen would be fine running the right system with the right Coordinator and he is someone you know ! Not many levis'es fall in your lap

I misspoke. Stoops is not one to pad stats, but he’s had opportunities to play backup QB several times, but chose to leave in the starter for a few more series when game was in hand.

He did let Beau throw the ball in a game last year after game was in hand. I remember him telling opposing coach he was trying to get throwing reps and not trying to run up the score.

What about Sheron? Is he not a viable option?
I've wondered the same thing. All reports I've heard say he's got a strong arm, is athletic, pretty fast. Can he read defenses and make the right throw? No one knows at this point. I'd like to see all the QBs get to play some early and run the offense so we get an idea of what we might have for the future.

It's not that he isn't Levis but he just doesn't have the kind of arm that can threaten much of the field in SEC games. So it would be a different kind of gig. I mean, somebody referenced Dusty Bonner above and he had some 'success' just throwing to tight ends all the time because that's what he could do. But that was a little different SEC at the time and success was 6 wins.

^ Dusty gave it his all, but when big arm - and everything else - JLo came along, he was relegated.

1. Uk isn’t I’m on a viable HS Qb at all. Maybe Parson decommit from FSU will turn into one
2. UK ain’t going into 2023 with only Allen Hogan and Sheron…we’ll see if Wade twin stick at Qb

I think it’s 100% solid UK will be selling a high rated kid that isn’t winning their job that UK is the place to come and recreate Will Levis story part II.

I would put Allen close to Billy Jack Haskins with arm strength but Billy jack was way more mobile ! Your not giving Allen his due on arm Strength

Love your post except the part about BA needing to gain 25 lbs, he weighs 215 now. Doesn't need more weight imo! Beau despite what I read on here is a pretty good size for an SEC QB!

Without question. All non starting QBs will look at Will Levis 2022 as their dream scenario....transfer in & be featured as the face of the program, along with developing into potential 1st rounder.

Tfer qbs looking for a new home this Dec also will love our overflowing room of talented fast young WR we have built over last 2 classes.

IMO UK will have to beat off 4* & maybe even 5* portal QBs with a stick at the end of 2022 reg season. We would be the #1 most desirable landing spot.

IMO the quarterback situation is much better than people are stating here! I say that because everyone is looking at the loss of a potential number 1 or first round QB like we have no other capable QB's. I watched the spring game and had a different take than most. Allen and Hogan both looked like SEC caliber QB's - but they didn't look like NFL number 1 draft picks! Skilled receivers along with a good OC who mixes it up can make a lot of guys look much better than you see when they are playing with the second and third teams. Don't get me wrong - I am 100% Levis guy - but I think many don't give our backups enough credit. The decision to go after only high caliber QB's this year in recruiting says a lot about where the coaches think we are as to back up QB's. Will UK turn down a 5 star transfer that looks a lot like Levis - heck no - but I believe they think we are better than ok with what we have now.

Go Big Blue!

I agree 100% with you. I think Allen not transferring is more than him just wanting to graduate from UK. (Granted, I have NO info and just my observation.)

I think Stoops likes the potential of handing QB position to talented upperclassman.

I do think we’ll be in good position for a talented transfer, then he’ll let them battle it out for starting role like other positions. Unfortunately, 2nd string QB gets little playing time. We’ll probably see 1-2 QB’s transfer after spring 2023 when someone wins starting QB.

Disagree. Otherwise, wouldn't it translate to a big time HS senior having similar interest with a roster that isn't loaded?

Now if Levis has a better season than last year, the draw might be there. Right now, the selling point for Levis improvement is not currently coaching at UK (Coen).

QBs commit early. Like by a year.

So Levis '21 season made no impression on the '23 kids?

What '24 kids are high on UK?

Truth is, Levis was a great fit for UK, but he was far from a 4 or 5* QB coming out of Penn State. He wasn't even that coming put of HS.

Think Hogan is being seriously undervalued by many. He was a 4* out of a TX HS that put up nice numbers. He earned a scholarship to Iowa, a perennial Top 20 school. Also had offers from Baylor, Iowa St, GA and TN among others. A year on campus plus 2 springs will be of great help before he takes over. I like his potential.

Some stats for you. Stetson Bennett is 5-11, 190.

Stats for you....we aren't Georgia. We can't surround a qb with nothing but 4 & 5* O linemen, backs, TEs, WR, all time defenses
Well we protected some other smaller quarterbacks with a lot less talent than we have now and we now have an OC who understands keeping the QB protected - if needed!

Go Big Blue!
