Roberts Compares Briscoe's Significant Wingspan to Other UK PGs

Wingspan aside, there's so much to like about this kid. I'm euphoric about having him. Very big bodied scoring guard with long arms, special ball handling abilities that many guards never gain (luckily we have two guards with that ability), some nice point guard skills, and tries to play a complete game. He draws a lot of fouls, he plays hard-nosed defense, he rebounds it well, scores from all over the floor, passes it very well. Definitely excited to get him on the floor.
I could say a few similar things about Matthews, who could be a terrific wing for us. Defends very well, passes well, rebounds it well, plays with a lot of toughness. It elevates your game quite a bit when you have scrappy guards who are tough defenders, good rebounders, excellent in transition, etc.
A lot to be excited about next season.

Wingspan is a weird thing to me, because it's not just measuring arm length, it's measuring across a player's body. Guys are built very, very differently, so what that means is that wingspan can have a different meaning for different players. You measure Nerlens Noel's wingspan, you're measuring a lot of arm. You measure Zach Randolph's wingspan, you're measuring a lot of chest. I think it's like 40 yard dash times in the NFL- it can be important, but only in the way it ties into a bigger picture.

What I take from Briscoe's measurements is that he's thick (I can see that for myself) AND he has long arms. That's a good combo.

He's built like a strong safety which is what I love. He better live at the free throw line from driving to the rim non stop. He's as beefy as some of the forwards in the SEC before he even hits a college gym. That's impressive

I think the standing reach number needs to be taken into account as well. Guys with the same height and wingspan can have significantly different reaches because of what you're saying.

Although the wingspan is an important number itself for defensive reasons, even on someone with a lesser reach.

He's already come out swinging against the dirty birds and I love it.
From what I have read on here and other places, he's got a lot of swagger about him and won't back down from anyone or anything. Ulis is much of the same way. I love it when the Cats have sub 6'5" guards who'd go toe to toe with a bear (i.e. Ramel Bradley punking Andrew Bogut). Now we have two of them it would appear. This season is going to be a lot of fun to watch.
Someone back up the way said Matthews will be a special player for us too. I agree with that sentiment.

On the blog: Chart comparing Isaiah Briscoe's wingspan to past Calipari point guards. (Longer than Wall and Harrison) http://bit.ly/1dWkiFJ

No way Briscoe's and Wall's arms were longer than Delk's. No way.

That and he's got a major dose of alpha male DNA. He'll make a lot of people big fans fast imo.

It's gonna be a fun year to watch with two scrappy, hard nosed, defensive guards, I hope the whole team adopts this attitude and has lots of swagger, just wonder how the rule changes will affect how this team plays, gonna be fun to watch[thumb2]
