Rebounding ?

We don't do much rebounding unless it takes a lucky bounce right into our hands. We miss Oscar.

When Adou is healthy we rebound enough. U cant expect to be the best offensive team in the country ( that matters) AND get a ton of boards. You can't rebound made shots. Its that simple.
We should do a better job rebounding the other team’s misses.

There's so many good points to be taken away from this game. I think rebounding against this Florida team is one of them, for sure. So, rebounding = A

Keeping composure in an extremely hostile environment, A++

Low turnovers ( second half really cleaned it up) = A

Simply getting the ball into Reed's hands to make free throws down the stretch = A++ from me on this one.

Showing tenacity, the will to win, high energy, refusing to lose = A++

and on and on.

great win, very happy for us all !

Oscar would be great on this team.
Oscar would destroy the offense we have this year. It wouldn't allow the ball movement and spacing we are able to get. Back to the basket bigs don't mesh with our offense, especially when they play below the rim and aren't good defensively.

I loved Oscar to death but very glad he moved on.

Respectfully disagree. Maybe if he accepted a different role. I have my doubts that he would have, and I’m pretty sure the core of our team had the same concerns.
If Oscar had this years group of guards, we would still thrive . Possibly even more so

Cal said in the Post-Game that only losing the rebounding battle by 3 is basically like out-rebounding them, and I totally agree.

Arguably the best rebounding team in college basketball, on the road in a TOUGH environment, playing from behind most of the game, and to basically play even with them on the glass and actually OUTREBOUND them in the 2nd half?

Amazing performance in that part of the game.

Gotta disagree with you … at least today.

First, I agree Oscar was a rebounding machine and we probably will not see another rebounder like him. (Maybe the best UK rebounder to put on a UK uniform.) The man out-hustled everyone and had hands like vice grips.

I thought UK improved greatly in the rebounding dept. It was an obvious focal point over Christmas. Our bigs got the message about “rebound” or sit the bench. It was first time I saw Ugo and Bradshaw rebound outside their area. We saw players fail to block out and immediately come out of game. (The bench can be a great motivator!)

Only time will tell how we rebound in future games. But, I thought today was much better.

On a similar point, I’m guessing Edward’s mins will go up or down based on rebounding. It’ll probably be the determining factor if he has a breakout. Three rebounds from him is simply not acceptable. Cal will give him some more rope because he has a high ceiling if he can mentally put it all together. Thiero will get more mins if Edwards doesn’t rebound better. Thiero’s ceiling may not be as high, but you can write him down for 6-8 rebounds a game if he gets 22-24 mins a game

Anyways, I thought rebounding was much better today. They obviously focused on it over the holidays.

We couldn’t play with the flow we do without Oscar changing his approach.

Listen. I get it. Some people loved Oscar and miss his presence. I feel differently, but I wish him well.

As far as this group of guards, I didn’t hear any stories about them texting Oscar trying to get him to return.

I think it's such a dumb take to say Oscar would destroy the offense we have. He would have adjusted his game easily for the betterment of the team. Oscar was never a selfish player and having him on our team this would just give us another dimension.

He can't help the fact that he was one of our best options to go to. It was never like he was just demanding the ball all the time or anything like many on here try to claim.

I love our bigs we have this year and the things they bring to the table but the only one who really is on par with him offensively is Mitchell. Oscar ran the floor quite well and was just an absolute juggernaut on the offensive glass. He would have gobbled up so many of our missed layups tonight and put them back in. The whole narrative that Oscar was this slow and lumbering back to the basket center who just demanded we throw the ball to him is really quite ridiculous.

Agree to disagree. It's okay to not have the same opinion.

Look back the UK teams Oscar was on, there's a reason our offense was often subpar or non existent. Spacong eas terrible and we had to settle for contested shots a ton.

This is from a basketball perspective. As a player I loved Oscar, he was a great player and amazing rebounder. He also played hard and could create his own baskets. He'd fit much better in other teams offensive schemes. The way we play this year would not fit with Oscar in the post 35 minutes a game. That was my point, and in my opinion not having him is addition by subtraction. You are entitled to your opinion as well, as I said agree to disagree.

We're not good at rebounding even considering that. We rebound 28% of our misses (262nd in the country), while also allowing our opponents to rebound 28% of their misses (which puts us at 145th in the country). Most years under Cal, even before Oscar, we're a very good rebounding team.

I know they were dirty cheaters…..but this team needs to model itself off the Roy Williams UNC championship teams. They were always the best transition teams in the country. Played…just enough….defense to get by and were elite at offensive rebounding. You’re the stats savant but I believe they rebounded 36-39% of their misses on average. That play style with our roster = optimal season outcome.

We held them under their average and we rebounded better than our average. Probably because we shot worse than we normally do.

I loved the way those Roy Williams teams played. We need Bradshaw and Edwards to fully embrace crashing the offensive (and defensive) glass. I think Thiero is already there, if he’s healthy.

Edit to add: that 2017 UNC team led the country in offensive rebounding % at around 40%.

Honestly, Cal’s teams have been pretty good at this too, typically. But I don’t think we’ve had any teams that were elite at both outside shooting and offensive rebounding. Tough combo, to be fair.

Florida shot the lights out in the first half, and what didn’t go in bounced back 15 feet fight into their hands. They got several we should gotten cause we were standing there watching. We won and I’m happy especially being down big in the first half.
