I have a question on a couple of calls in bowl games that I don't understand.

First, in the LSU game it looked pretty obvious that, on one of their drives that the ball crossed the plane of the goal, but the player was ruled about 1/2 yard short. Was it just the angle of the camera? It was obvious that no part of his body was down because he was on top of other players.

Second, in the Bama/OSU game in the first half it appeared that the OSU QB was tackled in the end zone for a safety, but the officials ruled forward progress outside the end zone. My question is if he had passed the ball from the end zone, would it have been a dead ball, since apparently they had already ruled forward progress?

I don't have a tremendous amount of football knowledge, but these 2 plays definitely changed the outcome of games.

GO CATS

The ruling in the Bama game was that the defender "pulled" him into the endzone.

One the replay, you could see why they called that.

If you are talking about the play at the end of the half the officials on the line didn't have a good view of the ball and knee (didn't see him being on top of other players, was there another close one?) and called it short although the ball penetrated the near edge of the goal line. With the two angles showing the ball over the goal line and the Knee NOT touching the ground when the ball was foremost (but not looking down the line to see both at once) it was obvious he scored, but the STUPID prejudice for the call on the field made the replay official go with the ruling on the field.

In the second case, though it was very close and a judgement call, they ruled progress stopped outside the goal line and didn't call it a safety. It didn't matter what happened after that, no safety for intentional grounding, but if they hadn't ruled progress stopped outside the end zone and intentional grounding had been called it would have resulted in a safety.

I'm glad someone brought this up

The LSU player scored....period. It's obvious where his knee is (NOT on the ground) when the ball breaks the plane

The safety call was blown too. The OSU QB hadn't achieved forward progress. He actually was fighting to get rid of the ball still. Another bad, bad call. In this case it meant points AND possession to Alabama.

The officiating was abysmal in many of the games I saw....not just little things like a hold or not-a-hold gray area thing either

Case in point: the UO D-back who literally pulled #35 of FSU down and into the end zone on top of him. LOL That was so obvious. It was like a wrestler move. Ref right by the play, looking, had to see it....no call.

Another one (and I cannot remember if it was Ole Miss or MSU or Auburn): a receiver is breaking free creating separation on a downfield route and the defender gets one foot into a heel of the receover to trip him. No call. Deemed "incidental contact". Huh? IC is where you are both going for the ball and somebody falls. This was not even close. It was a trip. My recollection (I can't remember which games now--watched too much football the last three days) is it happened a second time as well.

Does anyone recall ANY holding calls? I can't. Let me know if you saw one.

If there ever was a year of "letting them play" by the zebras this one was it
