What is a good size for our defensive ends to be in our current defense as opposed
To a true 4-3 and how does Ware and Hatcher both get on the field at the same time without us getting the ball ran down our throats since they both go about 240.

Not a coach, just a fan.

The DEs in a 3-4 play essentially the same alignments as the DTs in a 4-3. The logical conclusion is that, ideally, they need to be about the same size as DTs. Counting the NT the 3 man front is really a 3 DT front. So more is better but to put a number on it lets say at least 275#. They are going to be lining up over the OTs almost every play. When UK used a 3 man front Z. Smith (264#) had to line up on 300+ OTs every play.

The 4-3 alignments can usually accommodate a smaller, faster DEs on both sides but especially on the W/S. Not uncommon to see 240# "speed rusher" at W/S DE.

Peace

So with just size in mind Hatcher and Ware are best served standing up and not being de's in our system. Yes?

Thanks for the clarification on that term. I have seen others post this about Hatcher but was not sure what it meant.

IMO any of the smaller quicker DTs. Miggins would be in that group along wit CJ Johnson and Meant. You play quicker tackles as the two outside members of the 3-4 DL which means they will most times be smaller than the nose tackle. They are call DEs but are basically DTs. Most of the duties you would think of as DE by a 4-3 will be done by the two DE/OLB hybrids.

I think Miggins will replace Z. Huegenin will be the other DE. Though, I expect a good amount of rotation.

Uk's front 5 will be IMO:

- DE Hugenin/Dubose
- DT Elam/Meant
- DT Lewis/CJ Johnson
- Stand up OLB Jabari on run downs/Hatcher or Ware on pass down

Tubman being out is a killer as he'd push for starting DE job with Hugenin. It's so hard to make a call on Miggins as Juco's are hard to predict in first year. Personally to me, that is a very shaky front 5 on defense. I think 1-2 kids will have a solid year but the other 2-3 spots could be spotty or huge busts next year. Don't feel good at all on the trenches next year.

A couple different ways to go with the DE. Bama likes big guys, real big guys, 290-310 range, which is probably a pretty good idea against power teams. But in the SEC only 3-4 power or pro style offenses left so you can't really afford to build your team to stop that. UGA's DC likes guys in the 275 lb range and at times we even line out one of our LB at that spot who was about 245, I am assuming he wants the quickness to deal with all the spread offenses. But regardless even the spread teams run it and the smaller guys are not ideal to deal with the spread rushing game. But you have to build the defense to contain spread offenses because it is so popular now. The biggest difference with Pruitt isn't the DE, its his ILB, he wants guys in the 220 range instead of the 240-250 type guys who can run and cover. Defenses are getting faster including the DL, don't need those huge hole pluggers as much as before.

That's close but Lewis and Elam both play nose while Meant and Elam are at the DT spot. The fourth spot you named is not a OLB but a stand up DE called the Jack End. You actually named the front 4 which is what that is. As Stoops has repeatedly said we are a 4-3 multiple defense showing the four spots above along with a pass rush type LB that can cover at the Sam LB. We also use two inside LB's, one a more traditional Mike that has run first responsibilities and a smaller Will but not tiny small. The main thing is he likes guys that can run for all the LB spots. He also likes length along the line spots.
