Question about Maryland?

So, I see that they're starting to play with the big boys on the recruiting trail. They have a good shot at Josh Jackson and they're trending for a top 3 player in 2017.

Is Under Armor the reason for this? No offense to Maryland but they really haven't done anything in a long time.

1. Large metro area with proximity to many prominent AAU programs and prep schools (Melo Trimble from DC area).

2. A coach who actually has paid his dues and he slowly built up his recruiting connections and can actually get in the door with all the east coast talent (Gary Williams was almost Tubby Smith and signed a ton of 3-star/JUCO guys in his latter years).

3. Out of the ACC shadow of Duke and Carolina, expanded more into Big Ten territory (Diamond Stone from Wisconsin).

Their football program is going to improve as well by coming to the B1G.

A lot has to due with Kevin plank and under armor. Diamond stone is a prime example and if Gabriel decides on Maryland you can bet it has to do with the UA connection

Call me ignorant but Im just not sold on the Turtles.

Too slow.

1. Under Armor wisely targeted youth as a marketing plan years ago. Now, those kids are growing up and UA is the cool brand.

2. Great recruiting ground.

3. Good program traditionally.

Maryland has some of the nastiest fans known to man. I am glad they are not in the SEC. Screw Maryland and their fans.

There was a long, detailed article in the New York Times recently about how the guy who started Under Armour - a Maryland grad - is following the Phil Knight Nike blueprint at Oregon to turn Maryland into a sports power house.

I hear this kind of thing a lot, and it always leaves me asking myself something....

Did I fall asleep and miss Oregon becoming a powerhouse?

I hear this all the time, things like "Look what Nike has done for Oregon!" and "Oregon dominates thanks to Nike".

Sure football has been good the last few years, but with not a whole lot to show for it.

No national championships in Football, no national championships in basketball, none in any other sports really that I know of...

They seem just like every other middle-of-the-road athletic department to me.

So that's where I'd expect Maryland to land, except not even as successful as that because Under Armor will never surpass Nike

Oregon has been a helluva lot better than "GOOD" the last couple of years in football. They're a powerhouse and arguably one of the Top 5 programs in college football right now. Do you know how difficult it is to get to that tier with such little tradition?

Remind us what Wenyen Gabriel's "UA connection" is again? He is on Adidas circuit. Their two commits are Adidas and Nike kids

Eh.

It's not like they've been like UCONN basketball and become really good, really quick and won 4 titles and went to multiple Final Fours.

Yes, they've been good.

But they've only won 4 conference titles in the last 14 years....only 4.

They've been to 4 BCS bowl games all-time in the BCS era (last 18 years or so)- (which I would say is about equivalent to an elite eight, except 10 football teams make BCS games, and obviously only 8 make the Elite Eight).

It's not like Oregon has been dominant. They've never gotten over the hump, and their success (as far as I know) is solely limited to football, not in basketball, baseball, track, or anything else for that matter.

I guess I'm just not buying into the whole "Nike makes Oregon so dominant" thing.

As a terp fan I agree with this statement, except I don't think the football team will be improved this season, but maybe in 16 with Haskins as QB.

He's participated in multiple UA camps and events. He might be on the Adidas circuit but is no stranger to UA.

And the Diamond Stone recruitment is looking eerily similar. Everyone thought he was a lock for his hometown Badgers and if not them most thought UConn was next. No one really saw Maryland as the landing spot especially seeing they are in the BIG now and will compete against Wisconsin. Rumors say UA offered Diamond father a job of sorts. Who knows if that is true.

Plank has let it be known he wants to make Maryland a collage powerhouse and will provide Marland with all necessary resources. It's the apparel arms race that Nike and Adidas have played for years but UA is being more aggressive to gain larger market share.

Yeah, they've been good- they've been REALLY effing good.

Their last 10 seasons:

2005 Mike Bellotti 10–2 7-1 2nd L Holiday 12 13
2006 Mike Bellotti 7–6 4-5 T-5th L Las Vegas
2007 Mike Bellotti 9–4 5-4 T-4th W Sun 24 23
2008 Mike Bellotti 10–3 7-2 2nd W Holiday 9 10
2009 Chip Kelly 10–3 8-1 1st L Rose† 11 11
2010 Chip Kelly 12–1 9-0 1st L BCS National Championship Game† 3 3
Pacific-12 Conference (2011–present)
2011 Chip Kelly 12–2 8-1 T-1st (North) W Rose† 4 4
2012 Chip Kelly 12–1 8-1 T-1st (North) W Fiesta† 2 2
2013 Mark Helfrich 11–2 7-2 T-1st (North) W Alamo 9 9
2014 Mark Helfrich 13–2 8-1 1st (North) W Rose Bowl

How in the hell is that not impressive to you? And it's not like they're playing in the Big East. They're playing in the 2nd best conference in football.

When you say "no one really saw Maryland as the landing spot" for Stone, you must be forgetting the 5+ recruiting writers that Crystal Balled him to Maryland as many as six months before he actually committed.

I'm not naive to the positive effect that UA has on potential Maryland recruits, but for all the "dirty" recruiting that is going on, there sure is little proof. This so-called job that Bob Stone was offered by UA was a call out from one writer, who had (and still has) zero evidence that it ever happened. Probably because it didn't.

So tell me, what exactly is UA doing? I always see thinly veiled reference to UA "influence", what exactly does that entail that results in a player ending up at Maryland?

This whole thing is hardly as sinister as people like to make it sound. I mean it's really the whole point of shoe sponsored grassroots basketball programs. Kids come up playing on the UA circuit, get to know key members of UA grassroots, develop relationships with those people, and feel comfortable continuing those relationships at the college level. I'm sure in the case of guys like Josh Jackson and Trevon Duval there are preliminary talks of sponsorship deals at the next level, but those would be there regardless of whether or not they attend Maryland and certainly don't extend down to guys like Gabriel, Huerter, or Cowan.

I believe Gabriel played in E24, which is an All-Star game consisting of both UA and non-UA kids, I'm not aware of any other UA exclusive events he attended. I would guess the fact that Maryland was recruiting Gabriel back when he was a barely on the radar, 150th ranked player is a far bigger factor in his recruitment than the nebulous idea of "Under Armour Influence."

"multiple UA camp and events". The top 24 players in the country except the ~8 kids that Nike paid all played in the UA elite 24. Top recruits play in all the events, including the Mcdonalds all american game, which is sponsored by Adidas. Those recruits playing in the MCD game might be on the Nike/UA circuit, but they are no strangers to Adidas!

Do I need to bring up the Rudy Gay recruit story???

Maryland has a very nice campus; Josh Jackson said: "It's a beautiful place" after his visit. Jackson also said he fell in love with the Xfinity center. It's close to DC with a lot of things to do. If you have ever been to the triangle area in North Carolina, you would see the difference. That area is just bland with very little to do.

Does anyone remember that idiot kid that was on here a few years back talking about how the Harrisons were going to pick Maryland? That was comical.

What was he smoking when he was taking his visit?

The Harrisons were a good miss. They should have been 3-stars, and if they had gone to MD, they wouldn't have landed Trimble. One of them shot under 30% from the 3 point line and missed a big shot against Wisconsin, allowing Duke to win the title. Then, there was that epitaph at the news conference. Bad karma and addition through subtraction. The rest of the team were good kids, but the Harrisons underachieved.

And look guys the little idiot has returned. [roll]

Great sarcasm.

Let's hope Kentucky can continue to land such dreadful underachievers like the Harrison Twins, carried us to the title game one year, helped take them back to the Final Four the next year.
